4 Tips to Teach Your Kids about Recycle, Reduce & Reuse

Everyday is Earth Day.

In order to save our planet Earth, we could do our bit by practicing the 3Rs _ Reduce, Reuse and Recycle daily trash, old items and kitchen waste into good use.

As parents and adults, we should teach our kids about cleaning the environment, how to care our planet Earth by playing the role model.

All kids are alike “sponges”.

They are keen to know the causes, questions asked without even thinking because their mind is blank as a “white paper”.

Have you noticed that little kids love to be helpful when parents or teachers give them easy tasks to do for nature?

Kids feel proud of themselves and happy when they gained approval from parents and adults for doing right actions.

It is easy to encourage kids into performing volunteer jobs for environment projects because our little children are happy to be outside in the nature than staying indoors.

Kindergarten and primary schools had implemented environmental subject as part of the school curriculum in order to expose school children early to educate them about 3Rs _ Reduce, Reuse and Recycle

This Earth subject which is related to Science helps the nature to have a second chance to survive in this harsh environment by teaching our young generations the correct behavior from the start.

In addition, we could teach our kids to practice the earth projects at home, in the public areas, in school and in our daily lifestyle.

Here are 4 Tips to Teach Your Kids about Recycle, Reduce & Reuse

#1   Start at home

The best place to take place is at the comfort of the child’s home.

Parents should play the role model by practicing Recycle, Reduce & Reuse because our kids imitate everything that we do everyday.

Teach your child what is nature, show it him with pictures from encyclopedias and the objects related to the 3Rs at home.

Home is the best place where junks, trash objects are discarded after used.

Hence, it is the first place to start teaching your child how to Recycle, Reduce & Reuse them into good use.

#2   How to Recycle

Everyone in the family has to participate in this Recycle project.

Collect or put all recycle items into appropriate bins or bags such as:

• plastics
• glass bottles/jars
• tin cans
• paper / cardbox

Instruct your child to help out with:

• stacking up old magazines or newspapers into short piles while you tie them up with strings. Remember to instruct your kids to wash their hands with soap and water in order to remove the dust and inks.
• gather used plastic bags, plastic drinking bottles, empty shampoos into a rice bag.
• Explain the purpose of putting them together instead of throwing them into the bin. ( Send to Recycle centers)
• Remind your kids not to throw trash into the streets.
• Never throw trash out of the car window while travelling

#3    How to Reuse

• When you plan for grocery shopping trip, bring along Recycle bags instead of getting new plastic bags from the cashier. Explain to your child that plastic bags are non-biodegrade (cannot be change/decompose into something else)
• Reuse junk mail or envelopes. Use the reverse side which is empty to write short notes or for your child to scribble, drawing, coloring.
• Collect egg cartons, straws, buttons, old baby clothes, cereal cardbox as craft supplies.
• Create homemade toys, greeting cards and storage container with these reusable items.
• Explain to your kids where does paper come from ( trees) and how to save trees from chopping them down.

#4    How to Reduce

• Reduce kitchen waste by mixing into compost to fertilize it
• Reduce vegetable scraps ( carrots, Bok Choy, spinach, green beans ) into mini vegetable garden. Plant the spinach roots into small flower pots or plastic milk jug with soil. Plant carrot tops in Yogurt cups, water it and allow sunshine in the kitchen. Allow your child to be responsible for this simple task.
• Reduce using paper bags at fast food restaurant by bringing your own lunch box and recycle bag.
• Many restaurants and street vendors encourage customers to bring their own tupperware  instead of using lunch box polystyrene which is non-biodegrade and help them to save cost.

Conclusion

It is a good habit to remind our younger generations ( kids, teens ) that everytime he throws trash , he is adding another junk into our planet Earth.

Soon, we will be living in a world of garbage if we don’t start reducing, reusing and recycling trash.
