17K Participated In Clean Up Drive In Abra

Province of Abra. More than 17,000 people participated in the National Clean Up Drive held in the 27 municipalities last September 17 in this province.

According to Engineer Rhia Ta-a, environmental specialist 2 of Environment Management Bureau or EMB during interview with Radio Tirad Pass that 17,768 participated in the cleaning program that was done in 215,000 square meters in the 303 barangays of the said province.

Engr. Ta-a explained that during the said clean up drive, around 45,358 kilograms were biodegradable; 15,987 kilograms are recyclables; 39,000 kilos of residuals and 3,643 kilos are considered special wastes. Overall, around 88,000 kilograms of garbage were collected in the said program.

It was also learned that the government entered into a memorandum of agreement with a junk shop regarding the selling of the waste materials and garbage that can be sold that include the bottles, iron and steel, tin cans, plastics, aluminum and other materials that can be sold to junk shops.

The environment bureau also reiterated that the burning of waste materials is strictly prohibited as indicated in the Clean Air Act which was already implemented in the whole country. There is also prohibition in the digging a hole and putting the garbage in the pit.

The Clean Up Drive is also done in other parts of the country. Almost all of the barangays in the provinces participated in the simultaneous cleaning program initiated by the government. People participated in cleaning the shrubs, cutting the grasses and dress, and collecting waste materials from barangays, business establishments, and hospitals and other concerned groups and associations.

The program is intended to support the program against global warming and the climate change. Global warming which cause some of the extreme weather conditions in the planet earth caught the attention of the environmental advocates that brought the program to reduce, re-use and recycles of the products.

Bringing back the green earth is possible.
