Power outages happen for a number of reasons such as lightening hitting the transformers or an overload of the power grid because too much electricity is being used. Whatever the reason of the power outage, it doesn’t have to signal the end of a fun day. Turn the lack of power to your advantage. Without power to charge electrical devices, at some point family members will be forced to come together. Use these 12 ideas to jump start some family fun during the day or night.
DAYTIME ACTIVITIES
Go for a Bike Ride (make it a family affair by going for a bike ride. Take a different route than usual to make it a little more interesting)
Play Outside (play catch, badminton, basketball, soccer, or any other activity you and your family enjoy outdoors)
Play Board Games or Cards (pick your favorite game to play as a family)
Have a Cookout (just because the power is out doesn’t mean you can’t have a good meal)
Put on a Play (make up a play together, make props for it, and then act it out)
Act Out Parts of Your Favorite Movie or TV Show (have your children act out their favorite parts of movies or TV shows while you are the audience)
Go to the Park (take your children to a nearby park for the day. You can relax while they have fun playing and meeting new friends)
Night Time Activities
Have a Campfire (have a campfire and roast marshmallows. Tell ghost stories around the campfire)
Star Gazing (go outside and look for the constellations that you know and teach your children about them. See if you can find new ones to learn about)
Make Shadow Puppets (use flashlights to create shadow puppets on the walls and have the other family members try to guess what they are)
Play Flashlight Tag (use a flashlight as your laser to eliminate that player from the game)
Make Up a Story (pick a person to start the story and have each person add to the story until you come to the end of the story. See how funny the story can get)
