How to be a Wise Grocery Shopper

I don’t really love grocery shopping but then, every

housewife has to do this weekly or monthly grocery

shopping trip in order to supplement the kitchen and

household supplies that had ran out of stock.

Benefits of Grocery Shopping

I have to admit that grocery shopping is a very tiring

task but it has its own benefits.

I had learnt that walking from lanes

to lanes, going to back and forth

the same lanes is a wonderful way to

burn excess calories, tone up leg

muscles and spine too.

( if you are lazy to exercise )

Another benefit is I had learnt how

to organize myself, make planning ahead

of time rather than last minute

rushing to buy required ingredients for

a particular recipe.

( it will cost more instead of

saving money )

How to be a wise shopper

1. Ingredients Hunting –

You gotta look into your fridge and food cabinet.

Search for those necessary daily required ingredients that

had ran out of stock or “going to be” out of stock.

Jot down in your shopping list and stick it to the fridge

door with a magnet so that you can add in the list later.

In addition to it, hunt down the recipes that you intend to

cook for the week.

List out the ingredients that you do not have in hand into

the grocery shopping list.

I was scolded for not doing this. Learnt my lesson.

2. Coupons and vouchers-

Look out for printed coupons in newspapers, magazines

or online shopping websites.

Cut out or print out the coupons so that you can use them

for discounted items or get deduction for the total bill at

the payout cashier.

Some shopping websites do offer discounted vouchers

for a low price.

For example: Purchase a voucher worth $10 but pay $6.

You get to save $4 for your grocery shopping trip.

Daddy is pretty GOOD at this stuff.

3.Fill up your tummy-

Do not go grocery shopping with an empty stomach.

Have a quick snack or breakfast at home before

launching your trip.

Do not spend money on outside food especially

fastfood which is expensive and unhealthy too.

We always have some tuna/hotdog sandwiches or fried

rice at home.

4.Check the price-

It is wise to check the prices of the items you intend to

purchase at the Barcode Checker.

Although most price labels are available on the shelf, it is

often incorrect price when you check with the Barcode

Checker. You will be surprised when the items exceed

the price you expected.

It is alright if the price difference is just a few cents but

it is way too much if the item cost a few dollars more.

I do get “Shocking” prices when the cashier scan the

 items during payout.

5. Expire date-

DO check out the expiration date for each and every item

, especially canned food and packaged food.

New stocks are usually stacked at the back of the shelve

while the old stocks are arranged upfront.

I had to “DIG” out the longest expiration date items deep

at the back of the shelves.

Choose the longest expiration date, preferably one year

 ahead.

For perishable food such as fruits, eggs and vegetables,

look for fresher items or unripe ones.

Do check each of the eggs before purchase.

I always get broken eggs in a tray and rotten apples in

 pre-packed bags.

Don’t be shy or embarrassed when you check your food or

 grocery items before purchase.

What are your wise shopping tips?

Do you buy according to your shopping list ?

Do buy EXTRA food or items when there is offer but you

don’t need them?

Do share with me your opinion.

I would love to hear from you. Cheers!!

    • Whenever I was asked to do the grocery shopping, planning ahead of time is also my way.I also made some list of what to be purchase.

In my list, I put the prioritize item on top before those that are not necessary.

    • planning ahead is not good and i always keep forgeting the things i want to buy, i need to find another way to make the list, because when i do it on paper of on the phone i feel lazy to get the phone or the paper from my purse, really i feel no i know what i want tno need to waste time and look at the list
