Tricks of the trade
I suggest you should to go to your mirror regularly and give the idea of smiling practice on a regular basis. Maybe the some of the success I have received as a marketing professional is due to my sweet smile (kidding) But I can assure you that the smile has given me some of the best friends I have offline.
Okay, I have never understood why someone would want to stay quiet unless he has not done something terribly wrong or maybe unless he has something to hide or committed some crime which needs him to into solitary confinement.
In my views it is certainly not a natural state of thing although it may take a while for some people to open up but I know these people get very friendly once they get to terms and identify the nature of the person they are talking to.
To be very frank I have come across quite a few passengers in my traveling days especially during air travel when I sat besides people who kept quiet during the entire duration of flight. I have had my quota of so many co-passengers that I can write a book on this topic but yes I felt shy myself in starting a conversation when my co-passenger was a lady. Young ladies and girls really made me feel shy and I could never start a conversation myself unless I got a signal from them.
Sense of Humor
Let me add that I prefer people with good sense of humor and get along nicely better still if they have no sense of arrogance or overly sense of proud about anything in particular be it money, property popularity or they are celebrities. I agree looks play a major role in deciding whether the person next to you would react the way you want him.
I am planning to write a book and I have already written 10 chapters and I hope my traveling experiences and number of people I met would qualify me for successfully write a book on how to make good friends out of inverts, extroverts, proudly, smart, shy and friendly people.

There are countries having people hard to get.When I toured in Japan, I smiled at someone and asked something only to hear him saying" Hey, are you crazy"? My goodness first time to hear someone telling me if I am crazy for I smiled at him. I also smiled someone when I was in Auckland city only to receive a frown face of the lady hahahaha, so weird people I met in my life.In Philippines, the country where I lived, we are described here as most friendly and hospitable people in the world.
I am not sure if other nationalities are open to Asian gestures. All I know, I always give a big smile to strangers while traveling. For all the places I've been to, I received a good feedback with the sweetest smile.
