There is second hand shop or centre located nearby my house. The public donate their unwanted or unnecessary goods, cloths, toys, electrical goods, IT gadgets, some in good conditions and some in bad condition that need repair , and old newspaper or magazine to the centre for the centre to resell and earn some income to sustain the operation expenses of the old folks centre which is under the management of this second hand shop.
Other than the old folks centre, this second hand shop has set up a free lunch restaurant for cook and provide free lunch to the old people in the town, the senior citizen in need can go over and have a free lunch every day.
Thus, I like to donate some unwanted and unused goods to this centre for them to resell. And, I even like to visit this centre to buy some second hand goods and donate some cash into their operating fund.
The reasons I love to buy old things are :
1. I donate money indirectly into the charity fund beside buying something home;
2. The old things are always cheaper than the new one, sometimes half price of the latter and some just about 20% of the new one;
3. The old thing or antique thing always has a beautiful story behind it. I love to read some old books and image how the previous owner read and rated it;
4. The old things has better quality in term of material wise, I found the some new product from the same brand do not have same or good quality as the old product. This happen to our Singer manual sewing machine, the technician keep mention to us that the new one doesn’t as good as the old one.
Thus, I grabbed a old Singer manual sewing machine in the second hand shop at MYR(Malaysia Ringgit )100 or equivalent to USD25 two years ago.
And, I grabbed another Singer manual sewing machine which has 60 years history at MYR60 or USD15 few days ago.
Don’t ask me why I like manual sewing machine and why Singer. I just love those old things! Haha!

Some people develop love and like for old things. This is no doubt a good hobby. There is no guarantee we always will be on the profit side. Sometimes we will incur heavy loss also. But, the chances for the latter are less.
Yes. The price of the old ones will be half of the new ones. It is also true that most of the machinery will have good quality material wise than the new ones.
I had a good experience. I got Manual singer sewing machine which is of 60 years old. We were not using it. I wanted to use it. So took it to the servicing center. The mechanic was an expert. He just saw it and asked 'WHY WAS IT KEPT IDLE FOR THE LAST 40 TO 50 YEARS". I told him the reason He asked for the machine and was ready to pay Rs.6000/- as is where is a condition. I did not accept for that and got it repaired. Now it is perfect.
Similarly, the story of my St.Thomas Wall Clock which is really 150 years old. My grandfather purchased it in those British days.
I really enjoy to have them and take good care of the above two items.
Good article. We have in the States a similar location. We call these places Thrift stores. They are designed to raise funds for the homeless and needy. Rich people contribute to these centers and you can find clothes with the receipt tag with it in good conditions. Plus, if you do your homework right, you can find good antique items in which you can sell for a profit. My wife and I have shopped at these places and we have gotten good deals,especially with the clothes. These places are good because not only do you get super deals but your funds helps out those in need. It is a win-win deal!
Mr. Siva, those antique lovers look for profits and it towards old coins, paper money, stamp, antique furniture, etc.
Me, just for fun and own collection, not much for profit. Haha!
Singer manual sewing machine is always the best, I believe, especially those old one, with 50 years and older. If you have an older, with 70 years old, I believe your must have a very nice flowery stand. This is what I always looking for and admired to, but yet get one with me so far. Sigh!
St. Thomas brand clock, I have no idea on the brand, but I just bought a digital Telesonic wall clock at USD4, we repaired it , it can play music and with some lights on , my kids are very happy with it. I believe, a new one could cost up to USD150 at least.
Yes, take well care of those antique items with sweet memory.
@Caleb, it’s win-win deal, but I not really go for profits, but most of the retires and furniture manufacturers come here and buy for re-cond those furniture for resell for profit.
The places around me that sell used items cost more than me buying new ones so I opt for the new ones :) But that's great you found items you like and they also help small businesses along with free lunch meals for who wants them! That is very sweet :)
