There is a point in which you say; “I don’t care.” That tends to show that there might have been, at some time, a moment when you cared. Beneath that is Indifference. When whatever it is or was is no longer of any particular note.
Beneath Indifference comes Demotivation. This means, whatever it is, was, is something you actively don’t want any part of.
You may work for a company and might have started with a sense of enthusiasm. This was beaten out of you by a Boss From Hell until you don’t care. The indifference moves from not caring whether the project is a success or not to the point of being so totally demotivated that you would sooner walk away and let it plunge to the ground than sit and watch it fall.
Some years ago I joined a group and I cared about it. I was interested, I was active, but as in many things, the others there had a kind of attitude which could be translated as, anything you want, we won’t do it. Anything you suggest, we will turn down. If it costs us money to do opposite of what you say, we will do it.
It took a little time for this to sink in. I kept thinking it was one of those transient attitudes which would pass. It if does, I won’t be around to see it. I’ve reached the point from Indifference to Demotivation, in which I am actively not interested.
Some years ago, just before a meeting, I heard a sound system start up. I took it upon myself to walk the two blocks to the Dee Jay and ask him to keep it down to just before 7 pm.
I walked back and participated in the meeting.
That was some years ago.
Yesterday, the music was blasting, and the speaker asked me to call the caretaker to tell them to turn down the music. The caretaker refused, it is not his job. Almost chuckling I returned to the Speaker. She then asked me to ask the Security Guard, I went to him, he said that was not his job.
Keeping a straight face, I told her what he had said, then took my seat.
Sure, it wasn’t easy to hear the speaker, but I wasn’t listening anyway. I kind of enjoyed her discomfort, but hey! She and the pile of members are pretty crummy for human beings. Their behaviour has so turned me off that I moved into the realm of demotivation.
I don’t care if the music drowns out the meeting. I don’t care if the ceiling falls in. As long as I am not injured, it is not my problem.
I didn’t realise how demotivated I was until I was sitting there, and remembered the years past when, without being asked, I had walked down the road to make that request of the Dee Jay.
It became one of those retrospectives, when you look at your life now, look at it then, and track how you reached here.
I assume the caretaker and security guard have walked a little faster than I did, for both post date my first foray to the Dee Jay. Both of them couldn’t care less about the meeting, the members, or anything beyond the pay cheque. And if they both lost the jobs today, it wouldn’t really bother them, because like me, they are demotivated.
The behaviour, the attitude, the presence of the members of the group are such that ‘dislike’ would be the best they could get from the rest of us. Dislike would be better then Indifference or Demotivation.

You reach a point where you are somewhere left of indifference. it is like going to a particular supermarket and explaining to the owner that they should move the carts so that there is more parking. The Owner doesn't move the carts. So you go to another supermarket.
At one point, you cared. You wanted to shop here. You made the effort to inform the owner of the problem. You returned, the problem was not fixed. You shrugged, now are indifferent. You go to another supermarket. You have no intention of going back to the first.
You don't care if they are having a sale or if that first supermarket goes out of business. The mere fact that there is no where to part because of the carts has demotivated you.
