It is now no news that the instant messaging giant Whatsapp has changed their privacy policy. With this change will come a lot of things you are not used to seeing on the Whatsapp instant messaging application.
Just some months in the near past, social media giants, Facebook, bought over the ownership rights of the instant messaging app Whatsapp; and since then, we have not heard any news from them as to their plans on the instant messaging app. The app has been running smoothly and I must confess, I have enjoyed this app a lot as it has help me to connect with a lot of friends I’ve longed forgotten. There have not been so much interruptions or disturbances on the usage of the app but now, all those might just change swiftly.
Facebook recently announced that there will be sharing more data from the Whatsapp application to its social media counterpart –Facebook. They will be sharing things like users’ phone numbers, date and time last seen on Whatsapp, and the likes of them.
The implication of this change in their privacy policy is that you will get to be seeing advertisements now on your Whatsapp as you chat. They also said that the users’ number they will share with facebook is to help facebook users to see more relevant friend suggestions as they will use your phone number to target the numbers on your contact who are also on facebook but are not yet your Facebook friends.
Personally, I see this as a stab in the back. We all know what Whatsapp stands for and how it helps us conserve data. The adverts itself will lead to higher rate of data consumption and it will trickle down to our pockets. We all will pay for it.
