What is Blood Pressure?

Blood pressure is just what it sounds like: the pressure inside the blood vessels. With a normal amount of blood, healthy heart and healthy elastic blood vessels, we get a normal blood pressure. Low blood pressure can cause dizziness, especially just when you stand up. This is generally harmless and can depend on fluid or salt reduction. Mild or moderate rise of blood pressure rarely occurs with obvious symptoms like headaches. In reality, high pressure can cause nausea, fatigue and severe headaches. High blood pressure is due to the increased amount of salt and fluid in the blood.

High blood pressure can also be due to increased amount of salt or fluid on the walls of blood vessels when they are thickened and hard. Due to the reason that high blood pressure is rarely felt, one can go along with it without knowing anything about it. For the purpose of maintaining a good health, it is advisable to check the blood pressure every year even if you are healthy in general. This is required at least if you are middle-aged or older. High pressure becomes more common with age. High blood pressure causes increased risk of heart disease and stroke in the long run.

Hypertension or high blood pressure is often treated with medication to reduce health risks. But you can also lower the pressure with some lifestyle changes. In medical parlance, high blood pressure is referred to as hypertension, a word you might have heard too often. How is your blood pressure? Blood pressure is usually measured by pumping up a cuff around the upper arm. It then measures the pressure in the cuff that prevents the blood from passing out of the arm. This corresponds to the pressure inside the blood vessels. Blood pressure is indicated by two numbers, for example 120/80.

The first number, that is 120, is the pressure when the heart contracts and is called as systolic pressure. It is the maximum pressure in the blood vessels. The second number, which is 80, is the pressure when the heart relaxes between heart beats and is called as diastolic pressure. It is the lowest pressure in the arteries. You can measure your blood pressure with your family physician as well as at many hospitals. You can also buy your own blood pressure monitor and easily check your blood pressure at home at any time you want. What is good blood pressure?

If you are healthy and do not take any medicines for blood pressure then blood pressure is usually nothing to worry about. An excellent healthy blood pressure is 120/80 max. In general, it is the one slim, young and healthy people have. However, most of the Western world has high blood pressure. It is common in middle-aged and older people, especially when there are weight problems. Between 120-140 and 80-90 as the pressure in the pressure count is a precursor to high blood pressure. Otherwise, there is nothing that needs to be treated in people who are hale and hearty.

That's the reason why doctors instructed their patients to modify their lifestyle. If not, then it will fall to being hypertensive and maintenance of medications should be administered to them. There are so many secondary conditions that associated with high blood pressure. It doesn't choose whether you are slim or not.

    • I am on medication for BP and there are always side effects with these tablets. I am not a diabetic. There could be other factors leading to high BP.

    • Actually blood pressure is the stay of air in the arteries and the pressure of air in the arteries increases and decreases is called high and low blood pressure.

In other words we say that When your heart beats, it pumps blood round your body to give it the energy and oxygen it needs. As the blood moves, it pushes against the sides of the blood vessels. The strength of this pushing is your blood pressure. If your blood pressure is too high, it puts extra strain on your arteries (and your heart) and this may lead to heart attacks and strokes.

There are two kinds of blood pressure as Every blood pressure reading consists of two numbers or levels. They are shown as one number on top of the other.

The first (or top) number is your systolic blood pressure. It is the highest level your blood pressure reaches when your heart beats.

The second (or bottom) number is your diastolic blood pressure. It is the lowest level your blood pressure reaches as your heart relaxes between beats.

We must keep in mind that Even if you do not have high blood pressure at the moment, it is important to keep your blood pressure as low as you can. The higher your blood pressure, the higher your risk of health problems.

For example, a blood pressure of 135 over 85 may be “normal” but someone with this reading is twice as likely to have a heart attack or stroke as someone with a reading of 115 over 75.
