What Are Your Works in Progress?

“Work in progress.

How many of us have partially completed crafts lying about, or renovations started but abandoned when other things got in the way? And of course as writers, we probably all have a pile of half-written articles sitting on our computers. We have the best of intentions that we’ll return to them one day, but do we ever?

I must confess that some of my partially completed texts are three years old! They were saved in a directory with posts I was writing for a site where I was active at the time. I meant to get back to them and complete them, but by the time I had a moment to finish the writing the topic was stale. Or the season had passed, and I promised I’d come back and work on it when that season was approaching once more.

Or maybe the topic related specifically to just that site, and now the site had closed down…

Novels as Works In Progress

Years ago I wrote a novel as part of NaNoWriMo, the National Novel Writing Month. The advice then was that after such a hurried effort to get 50,000 words on paper, it was best not to look at one’s novel for a while at the end of the challenge. I put the novel on the back burner in order to focus on work for hire and real life demands on my time. And I never got around to editing it, let alone seeing it through to publication.

Handicrafts as Works In Progress

I have always gathered far too many bits and bobs for one craft or another. Don’t get me wrong: I do complete projects! I have made dozens of gorgeous cross stitch gifts, knitted sweaters for new babies, and even made macrame projects and candles. It’s just that I’ve also collected a lot of half-finished craft projects too!

There were the pretty herb-themed place mats that I had cut and pieced together, but never got around to sewing because my machine broke down. There were numerous old shirts and pants collected up to make a rag rug, and some even ripped into strips and braided. But I got side-tracked, and then someone (either kids or cats) tangled up the whole mess, and I had to throw out the tattered pieces of fabric.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve saved an empty lip balm tube, even bought the beeswax and told myself I’d make up my own lip balm. Or collected up the ingredients to make bath bombs, and then put off making them because I needed to go out and buy the moulds.

My Current Works In Progress

I’m not currently doing too badly when it comes to semi-finished projects. I have a pair of yoga socks and a quirky patchwork curtain I made for the kitchen, both of which are on hold until I can get more yarn. I also have a little shell stitch baby dress that I started to crochet last weekend. It’s about half as long now as it needs to be, but I’m only finding the time to work on it every several days. At this rare, it won’t soon be complete!

I also have an almost finished dishcloth that I’m making from a pattern a friend shared on Pinterest. I crocheted almost the entire thing last night before bed, but I have maybe four more rows to stitch, and then the finishing to do. I’ll want to make another piece – maybe a smaller version or a little facial scrubbie in the same yarn, so there’s an actual set once it’s done.

What are your works in progress this week? Why don’t you share on this Work In Progress Wednesday!

    • If I can't get a project done in on sitting, I never seem to finish it. I'm the type that has to go from start to finish. I have a small cross stitch I started for my hubby of a loon. Unfortunately, I never finished it and every time I see it, I say I'm going to get on it. Well, that was about 20 years ago! Wonder how long it will take for me to get on it. LOL

    • Drat...now it's Thursday. I could actually fill a "store" page with just the works-in-progress I'd be delighted to sell! (I.e. the knitting kits I've hoarded for years, which I would let other knitters buy and knit up their way if they wanted to.) That's not even to mention the long unwieldy novel, or novel series...

    • I have so many unfinished projects that I cannot even list all of them. I have completed projects and it feels so good to complete them, you would think that I would keep going. But life gets in the way and I always tell myself once my kids are grown and out of the house I will have more time to sit and finish everything I want to do. However, I would have to stop creating more unfinished projects in the meantime.

    • My uncompleted jobs are more than the completed. I should do something in that end

    • I am not much into project these days unless clearing up clutter could come under that category.
However there was one that will stay in my memory forever. I was knitting a sweater for my mother. I am useless in knitting but my love for her made me take on that venture. I had redo a few lines back and forth and this put me off. I kept that aside and it stayed there for years. My mother is no more.
