Cooking was never a silent for me. It was not an opportunity to be lost deep in my thoughts while I peel. Chop and stir either. While people are considered as their “ME” time, I do best in the company of my mom, my sisters/siblings, and even my dad. Why? Because I find comfort in having someone around to serve as my talking cooking book.
Kidding aside, communication is an essential ingredient in keeping a close and a healthy relationship not only with families but even in social and professional connection as well. Both my parents and my sibling are busy with their own works and activities every day, so we see to it that we make the most out every moment to catch up and talk about how our days went, our thoughts, or even just to check on each other if we were doing fine.
Perhaps the most common avenue for a good family chat is over a sumptuous breakfast or dinner. However, ours start the moment the pots or pans hit the stove or when the kitchen knife gets pulled from its rack. There is something quite therapeutic in chatting while the water simmers or when the scent of nutritional wonders starts to fill the air. The food we eat is not the final product. It is the conversation and shared the experience. It links us together as a family. The effort we exert in bringing different food ingredients to life becomes an underlying force for a memorable conversation. The kitchen indeed has its own hidden power. Similar to a social event, people don’t just enjoy the food and the gathering itself but they value every story and sharing they went through from the kitchen to the dining table.
Sometimes to start a good conversation was that easy. I, for instance, started with the “ wine and cheese gets better with time” phrase. With that, sharing thoughts with one another became more coordinated and simple.
Never stop the light and the conversation in the kitchen or anywhere in the house with your families around. It is where you can build up a family closer relationship. It is where you make your bonding intact.

Chatting time with the family is during the meals of the day. It may sound unethical for some families but this is the family time for us. Each family members is so busy doing their own business in between meals of the day. I should say that there is no dull moment during meal time with the family. Perhaps we have the funny side that is so innate to be shared. Close family knit is what I treasured with them.
