We Don’t Talk to Each Other Anymore

Everyone is walking with a cell phone, talking to someone who isn’t there.  Some are texting.   And those who sit in front of computers aren’t emailing,  aren’t communicating, they are posting to Facebook.

They are making these proclamations,  not having a conversation.   Posting their narrow personal view on some topic, announcing some observation.  They post, able to silence anyone who disagrees.

There are some people who comment on these proclamations.  But it’s no conversation.  It is no thoughtful exchange of views.  Often it might be a LOL or a ‘like’ but there is no dialogue.

I know people who have gone abroad.  People with which I’d like a long discussion.  But there is no sense emailing, for they boast; “I have 900 unanswered emails!”  as they make another post to Facebook.

Some claim they have ‘no time’ to answer emails.  But can be on Facebook 24/7.

I am amazed by this.

I sit before the computer,  and up pops a a pile of ‘notifications’ on my Facebook page. But they aren’t notifications as if there are people talking to me. These are people who have made their announcements on their own page and because we are friends, the rubbish is dumped into my page,  as if it is a cess pool.

I originally joined Facebook to play Scrabble.   A number of people I know who are aware of my nick and they post.  There are very few people on my page.  They are family, friends, people I know in Real Life.  They bring with them their friends, so every day my page is full of proclamations made by a friend and the comments made by one of their friends, and very little I need to see.

I like to talk to people.  Real people.  But, I guess that makes me a kind of freak.

    • I enjoyed your article and like your writing. I am a Facebook fan. Personally, I like to catch up with family and friends. Facebook live is a good asset because I can get a first hand view of the news. Social Media is,also, a blessing to me but I understand your point. Whenever I pass by people, they are more concerned with their cell than what is happening around them. I agree--Email is still a good way to express yourself and it is becoming a lost art. Thanks for sharing.

      • Imagine your notifications, 28 of them. Someone posting these 'observations' one after another. It's like dumping trash in my account. The news is better kept personal in emails.

    • I don't use facebook as often before. If somebody sent me a message from this social network, I would reply. I lost my drive of browsing the posts on my facebook wall. I find it corny in some ways. When writing sites were introduced to my life, my perspectives had changed. It would be better to be productive.

      • If you have something to say, it is better to put it here on a writing site, where you aren't making 'pronouncements' but writing a complete article.
