Warming up food

What’s in warming up food that it requires to be put up as a blog would be the question anyone would ask reading the title of the blog.  As they say the taste is in eating the pudding. And so please read on.

A time has come in one’s life where daily cooking is next to impossible, unless the wife stays at home and takes care of the house.  But this is rare.

It has therefore become necessary to take advantage of the fridge and prepare some meals that will last for a few days.

Thawing out the food and then heating is not the best way. Heating the food directly will lose its moisture and therefore its taste.

There is a neat way to warm up the food that brings  it back to freshness without losing any moisture. And the secret is steaming it.

Put some water in a vessel and place a colander over it.The colander should be  above water.  Scoop out whatever quantity of food is required for one serving from the container that is refrigerated. Close the colander and steam it for about 15 minutes on a medium flame.

You have a serving of fresh food done this way. Old bread steamed this way gets its moisture and returns to freshness.

Even chapatis could be done this way but instead of putting them directly in the colander they should be placed in a plate as too much moisture is not good for the chapatis. Also the chapatis tend to get stuck in the colander.

Same applies to stuff that is in liquid form. Liquid needs to be put in a vessel and the vessel placed in the colander.

Some would argue why a microwave cannot be used for this purpose. As far as I know the microwave will not provide the required moisture.

A word of caution. This method is applicable only for food that is preserved in the fridge. Any food left outside has to be brought to the boiling point else it will go stale.

    • It is a typical way for every household to reheat the food. As the years go by, most of them are using a microwave. But then, you are right steaming the food is also ideal for reheating the food.

      • I am not sure whether microwaving will add moisture to the food as reheating cooked food normally removes the moisture unless it is steamed.

    • Thanks for sharing. Steaming could be one of the best way for reheating the food, especially those dry food which does not contains liquid like pau, bread, etc.
For some Chinese dishes which contains liquid, I just re-cook it with adding in some water.
For the soup, I just put into a small sauce pan and reheat it.
Anyway, there is medical advice that overnight food is no good for health, and could cause stomach cancer. Many experts have explained that overnight vegetable produce nitrite, but nitrite is a carcinogen.
Thus, I advise my mom not to take overnight food too often or even not once. She likes to take overnight food which is too risky for a old age lady, it could lead
to diarrhea, and more serious could lead to gastroenteritis. It is a fatal disease for some aged people, they might fail to be recovered from this disease. For those more healthier one, they still need two to three weeks for recovery.

      • If food is kept in the fridge I do not think it will change significantly. I do that all the time. Steaming it brings it back to freshness.

    • yes, we chinese culture also use wok cover with lid and a big bowl of water pour into the wok, to steam meals or overnight meals too.
Besides that, we also use the rice cooker to warm up overnight food.
Anyway, using your method is cheaper

    • I do this sometimes but most of the time, I will just put the food in the pan and let it heated there. Sometimes I add more condiments too.

    • Nice but we do not eat leftovers at home.We just simply throw the foods in trash.despite we refrigerate the foods, bacteria can still accumulate the area.

      • We have been doing that ever since we had a fridge which means since many many years. Nothing ever has happened to us. I cannot think of throwing food in the trash bin.

      • You keep water in a vessel and place a colander over it. Place the food in it, close the lid and steam for sometime.
