The novel ‘War and Remembrance’ written by Herman Wouk is a historical romance and the sequel to ‘The Winds of War’. This book does pick up right where the ‘Winds of War’ ends. The War has started and a lot of changes have occurred for the Victor Henry family. This is a book that is also page-turner for the reader who will want to see now the family copes with the war and how the fears affect them.
The English teacher could compare the language used in the story and compare it to how language is used today and as a possible assignment the teacher could have the students write a journal as if the students were a character in the book. The boys could be Victor Henry or one of his sons or a character in history and the girls could be Rhoda Henry or Natalie Jastrow to Pamela Tudsbury.
Objectives to this book
Cognitive domain: The students will read the novel and learn what makes historical fiction as well as reinforcing what World War II was about from a social, economic, political, religious and educational milestone in history. What are the changes that took place in the world at this time?
Affective domain: The students will keep a journal about their feelings while reading the book in answer to the question ‘Will and could this kind of war happen again?’
Paychomotor domain: The students will read the books and write journal entries to explain how the students feel about what is happening in the books.
This article is kind of a continuation of the article about ‘The Winds of War’. As an activity that will tie both books together the classes could work together on a mural that shows the historical themes of the books as well as what the students think the characters look like in the books.
