When I was an undergrad a colleague who would go on to become a well respected psychiatrist, decided to do a thesis. With Feminism rising and ‘The Sisterhood is Powerful” proclaimed from every lip, he decided to set two women against each other.
Choosing two strangers who were in the same ‘Women’s Study’ class he did a series of machinations which would pit one against the other. It was not evident on the face of it, and it all seemed part of a outside project.
His ploy was successful. After a few words here and there, they scorned each other. He admitted his machinations and the women had their own retrospective and Epiphany and might have become sensitive to this kind of puppetry. Then again, not.
Women have always been pitted against women. In most cases, it works. Want to get this woman fired? Get another woman in the forefront. She will get rid of the first, and then one can appoint a man.
Want to discredit a woman? Get another woman to do so. Whether she’ll pretend to be her friend, her secretary, or her ‘supporter’, it isn’t hard to turn women against a woman.
There are ‘tricks’ women use to discredit.
For example, if you ask Mary about Ellen she can pause, look away, and then slowly respond; “I really can’t say,” in a careful voice which suggested she is ‘hiding something.’
She can pause, look confused, repeat; “Mary?” and need to be informed as to who Mary is, and her ‘ignorance’ is taken as not just unfamiliarity but that Mary is so inconsequential she is unnoticed.
Women have an innate distrust of other women. It is innate because it is imbued at a very young age. Men are to work as a team, (think warfare). Women are to look about themselves and then their children. They can expect their female ‘best friends’ to betray their secrets, go after their boyfriends, and try to tear them down.
As women are virtually raised to suspect and distrust other women it is easy to turn them against a target. It doesn’t matter what ‘this side’ is saying or doing, to destroy the woman on ‘that side’ is the centre of their beings.
To get women to stick together, to form that ‘Sisterhood’ is very difficult. And a bit too easily it can be destroyed.
