Unworking

This needs to be distinguished from not working, (such as being unemplyed, loafing off, or retirement) or doing acts which are detrimental to the business.

Real unworking is deliberate, it is done to ‘get back’ at the Boss From Hell.   It is done to destroy a co-worker or someone who got a promotion you felt you deserved.

Unworking is active, not passive.

The Unworking clerk may deliberately misfile vital documents.   The unworking receptionist might leave her desk when important clients are arriving.

The unworking staff member may wait until the calendar is jammed, and then ‘get sick’.

Unworking is done when a person feels abused, when they are looking to destroy the business.

Some employees accidentally ‘unwork’ because they don’t care.  They’ll put someone on hold forever, they’ll leave vital documents unprepared.

They couldn’t care less.

Some unworking is done as a protest against a change of rules, demands, duties.

For example, the Boss From Hell who demands every employee Sign In will see all the signatures before 9 am, but no workers at their desks.

A deliberate unworker will come in following all the rules. Get lost for a time, return looking busy.    An unworking will be at their desks with files piled to the ceiling, busy ‘working’ (or so it seems).   In truth they typed that document two days ago and are using it as beard to hide their suduku game.

The unworker will insure things are done wrong.  The wrong file, the wrong document, the wrong advice.  They will claim to have ‘mixed up’ two files if they are caught.

The unworker will leave the office for a designed mission and be gone most of the day while they handle their own business.

The unworker will chase clients by their behaviour and attitude.

Some unworkers need to be fired yesterday.  Some can be successfully relocated to another section.   Some are protesting against a supervisor or manager.

Whatever the reason, the owner of the company needs to be alert as to what is going on.

Some of the most ‘prized’ employees, who seem to have it all under control may be the best Unworkers.

You can usually tell when the ‘In’ and ‘Pending’ trays are stuffed and the ‘Out’ is unused.
