Two More Never Were Stars Of The 1960s

There were many stars who entered the 1960s with great expectations.

They were hyped, they got a lot of publicity. There were  magazines devoted to Celebrities filling the racks and things were cheap in those days.   People bought the magazines, followed the antics of their favourite stars.

Among them were two who got fantastic opportunities, but could do nothing with them.  For there is that little thing called ‘talent’.

Sue Lyon

Sue Lyon got the most a fantastic opportunity when cast in the leading role of Lolita in the 1962 movie.

Those who don’t know what Lolita was about, let me just say it was a shocker.  It was the story of a pederast and a twelve year old girl.

It was not going to be porn, it was going to be run in real theatres before real audiences so there had to be careful editing.

Sue Lyon did well in the role and received awards and attention.   A lot was expected of her.

She was quickly cast in other roles but faded into the wall paper.   She got chances but Sue Lyon didn’t have much talent nor presence.

By the 1970s she faded into secondary roles where no one noticed her.   She never became a Marilyn Monroe; she just disappeared.

Wayne Maunder

Most actors get one chance.   They are cast in some drama, and if it fails, they fade into limbo.

Wayne Maunder got three chances.

In the late 60s and early 70s this man, no one has ever heard of, was giving a starring role in three different T.V. serials.

Three Chances!

His first foray was with Custer.  This was a Western about the infamous George Custer before his death at Little Big Horn.   It was only 17 episodes long; which is beneath the usual 22/24 episode season.   Clearly it wasn’t popular.

Instead of swirling down the drain, Maunder was cast in another Western called  Lancer, where he had a leading role.   That did not do well.

But!  He was given a starring role in a Police drama called Chase.

He either had the world’s greatest agent, or connections to get so many chances.

Yet; his career went no where and I’m sure most of you are asking…Who?
