There are as many values in a household as there are members in there. Similar is the situation with society, the neighbourhoods, et al. It is therefore very difficult to have a consensus on how to live peacefully under these rather trying circumstances.
With housing being a problem more than one generation live under the same roof but with different values and tastes. This is the main cause for disharmony in a household.
In the good old days when there was the joint family system elders ruled the roost. Their word was law and everyone followed them regardless of whether they did was right or wrong but that guaranteed peace in the household.
In today’s world getting along therefore is an issue that needs attention. How best that can be done given the existing conditions need top priority failing which that could have a toll on one’s health.
-I have seen some families, though they live under the same roof, have separate lives be it cooking, choice of music and/or the kind of visitors that one has. They go on separate holidays and never encourage mingling with each others’ friends and connections.
-Some go even to the extent of giving each other space to breathe in that they will literally let the others be on their own atleast for some time. .
They own separate tvs installed in separate rooms. They encourage to use earphones so that each one appreciates music and/or tv programmes of their choice
While they do not hate each other this space that they provide for each other helps them bond and at the same time be there for each other should the occasion demands.
The seniors leave the city and settle down in rural towns making way for their next generation to breathe easy.
Seniors need to downsize their lifestyle so that they are comfortable in rural towns. I have seen so many seniors wanting to take part in social activities where in fact they are not welcome although this is not displayed openly. It is understood that the youth of today have fun in a way where seniors cannot adjust and therefore under such circumstances it is better that they stay away.
Finally learning to adjust to each other is the key to living together amicably.

Joint family system has a lot of issues associated with it.
Young people do not consider the thinking and ideas of old people. There may arise a lot of clashes among the two generations and these must be settled down by great care.
In my family, we still hang on to each other. The third generation is also included and my granny is so proud to experience it. At the age of 98, she still continues to be happy and having a sharp mind to live for.
