Before the word Halloween is the Todos Los Santos.
Because Philippines have majority population of Catholic religion, the observance of Todos Los Santos or All Saints Day has been part of the Philippine tradition. In fact, we known Todos Los Santos not only because it came from our former colonizer Spaniards which came the Spanish word but also part of the yearly religious activity.
This is truly an influence of the Spaniards in the Filipino. This is now our tradition which is even bigger than Valentines Day and Independence Day. And why not when All Saints Day and All Souls Day got two days of observance than the single days of the others.
More than the visiting of the tombs of the departed relatives and families, cleaning it and painting it in full white and weeding off those cadena de amor and the bushes is the chance of family reunion. Those who are working in the urban cities and abroad return home in the province then the family go together in the cemetery. Sometimes it becomes a party in the pantheon when the family brought some foods and pastries and eats together in the tomb.
But the true tradition is lighting up a candle in the tomb, offering a flower, attending the mass in the cemetery, whisking holy water in the tomb and says a little prayer. The mass usually last for an hour but you are there before it starts.
The mass usually held in the first day but there are priests who also do the mass in the second day. During this time, lots of people, sometimes in hundreds of thousands in key cities attending the said event.
Its like fiesta—like a festival.
Then, after the populated venue of that day. The noise and busy people—the next day will return to the normal situation in the cemetery—a very quiet day of that place.
