Tourist Interest places in Delhi

Old Fort

Purana Qila is also known as The Old Fort of Delhi is one of the most visited places in Delhi by thousands of visitors. The Old Fort was built by the Pandavas almost five thousand years before in pre- Mahabharata era in Indraprasth (now Delhi, the capital of India).

There are number of buildings of tourists’ interest in surrounding areas like the Zoological Park which houses a large number of animals from India and other countries of the world. There is a man-made lake just outside of Old Fort adjoining to Zoological Park with boating facility.(I have provided a list of other places in this post)

Incidentally, Indraprasth was also the capital of Mogul emperor Humaun. The Old Fort of Delhi is one of the most beautiful historical palaces of the world. The palace also known as Purana Qila is located at Indraprasth and is considered to be the oldest construction in New Delhi the Indian capital.

As Per the local belief The Old Fort was founded by the Pandavas almost five thousand years before that was built in pre- Mahabharata era. Indraprasth was also the capital of Mogul emperor Humaun later renamed Shergarh by the first Afghan King. Incidentally, the last Hindu emperor Hem Chand Vikramaditya who was also known as Hemu was crowned at this very palace after defeating the army of Akbar at Agra and Delhi.

The Decorated Gates of Old Fort

The Old Fort of Delhi is surrounded by 1.5 kilometer long walls which have towers and decorated gates on three sides. The three gates have a unique story of their own for instance, the gate in the western side is known as Main entrance of the fort and in south side the two gates are named after Humaun and the third one as Taluki Gate which is also known as Forbidden Gate as no one was allowed to use that gate. All these gates have balconies and sitting space, multi storied and have artistic work on them.

Other Tourist Interest Places near Old Fort

The general belief also says that this Palace was not lucky for any of the rulers including Shershah, Humaun or Hemu who stayed here during their rules. While at the subject regarding Old Fort Delhi, let me quote other famous buildings around like Qila-E-Kuhina (Kuhina Forte) Khairul Manzil Mosque and Southern Gate built for Shergarh.

There are many tourist interest places inside the Old Fort which keep visitors spell bound. One of these is a museum which has a collection of ancient items from Mogul and post Mogul era. The stepped well called Baoli (well) in local language is another star attraction of visitors to Old Fort.

The Light and Sound Show every evening at Old Fort and The adjoining Zoological Park are great tourists attraction of the Palace. The Palace is worth visiting as it displays the true Indian history. I loved the place for its beauty and other tourists’ interest places like Zoological Park which houses thousands of animals and an artificial lake with boating facility.
