Top 10 Universities in the world

The top 10 universities in the world for 2016-17 is based on the results of the QS World University Rankings® 2016-2017, assessed on six performance indicators. Four of the indicators were data based,   while two were based on major global surveys – one of academics and another of employers – each the largest of their kind.

  1. Harvard University: Established in 1636, Harvard University is one of the world’s most prestigious academies. With 20,000+ students across all programs, Harvard topped the University Rankings in Academic Performance in 2015-2016.
  2. University of Cambridge: Founded in 1209 and given the royal charter in 1231, Cambridge is the second-oldest university in the English-speaking world and the world’s fourth-oldest surviving university. With 20000+ students and 7000+ academic staff, Cambridge is consistently ranked as one of the world’s best universities.
  3. University of Oxford: Oxford University is a collegiate research university located in Oxford, England, United Kingdom. Having no known date of foundation makes it the oldest university and the world’s second-oldest university in continuous operation. Oxford is the home of the Rhodes scholarship, one of the world’s oldest and most prestigious scholarships.
  4. Massachusetts Institute of Technology:  Founded in 1861, the Institute is known for its research and education in the physical sciences and engineering and is often cited among the world’s top universities. With 1000+ faculty, this college has around 10000 students on roll.
  5. Stanford University: Founded in 1885, Stanford University is one of the largest in the United States. Its faculty and alumni have founded a number of companies that produce more than $2.7 trillion in annual revenue.
  6. California Institute of Technology: Caltech is a private doctorate-granting university located in Pasadena, California, United States. Although founded in 1891, the college assumed its present name in 1921. The university tends to be primarily devoted to the instruction of technical arts and applied sciences.
  7. University College of London: Established in 1826 UCL was the first university institution to be established in London, the first in England to be entirely secular and to admit students regardless of their religion, and the first to admit women. It is the largest postgraduate institution in the UK by enrollment and is regarded as one of the world’s leading multidisciplinary research universities.
  8. ETH Zurich: Established in 1855, ETH Zurich is consistently ranked among the top universities in the world. The QS World University Rankings by Subject has ranked it as the best university in the world for Earth & Marine Sciences.
  9. Imperial College London: Imperial College London was formed by Royal Charter in 1907 and is consistently ranked among the top universities. With Over 16000 students and around 4000 academic staff, Imperial has been ranked as the most innovative university in Europe.
  10. University of Chicago: The university, established in 1890, is one of the world’s most influential institutions of higher learning, with top-ten positions in numerous rankings and measures. The university currently enrolls approximately 15,000 students from around the world.
