To See Ourselves as Others See Us

There was this chap who came from a family of achievers.  His parents were professionals, his sisters were professionals.  He was… not.

He was a tall guy who wore glasses and hated them so got contact lenses.   To me, this was the biggest mistake because it changed him.   He now saw himself as beautiful.

He didn’t do well in High School and had to go to a community college, so left home and went to live in a dorm in which he felt he should be treated as royalty.

His mother spoiled him, as he was the only boy, and knew how to turn on the charm, the tears, and that gift of a smile.

He decided to become an actor.

So, he set off on his venture and got a role in a soapie.   Now, I am not saying that soapies are Oscar winners, but it was a good job and there was no reason for him to act as if he were better than his co-stars or make them hate him.   But he did, so his character was killed.

Somehow, but luck, he got a role in a serial on television, which could have mounted the charts.  Everyone was fascinated by his character.  He, thinking he was better than his co-stars got dropped from the credits and that was really the last time he had a job.

What I found with him was this sense of superiority.   No matter who he was talking to, he felt he knew more than they did, or at least as much.

He didn’t.

A lot of history that those of us know, whether it is because we don’t live in America, or because we do research,  is unknown to him; not only unknown, dismissed.   If he thinks that something happened that’s it.  No way to explain to him.

I recall wasting breath explaining how powerful the Moors were and he, who had them as slaves, said, “You are not wrong but…”  and went on to prove his point, which was completely fantasy.   I didn’t bother waste any more breath.

His response was a practiced one.

Anyone who disagreed with him and had authorities to back them up would be told, “You are not wrong, but…” and proceed into his fantasy world of misunderstood concepts.

You would think that someone who had made so many mistakes in life, who never realised that looks fade, but personality lasts, would halt his path and look around and say, maybe I’m wrong.  Maybe I should try to do it this way…?

Another friend of mine had one of those reverse events when she saw how easily I got along with people and how everyone hated her.     Maybe she went a bit overboard, but she saw her error of being pretentious and snotty when being nice would open all doors.

He, on the other hand continues to be what he is.  A person no one much wants anything to do with.

    • I hate airheads or braggarts. I distance from the, the moment I notice that he is one.

You can never win over an airhead. It is already inculcated in his head that he is right and no one can beat him.

Sad, that this attitude is what people don't like in a person. he is being laughed at or hated when he turns his back to the people he was with.
