I am planning to get a bigger refrigerator for home use recently. Thus, I am shopping around do some research on this.
I am having a refrigerator at 390 Litres now, which a bit small for a family of 4 pax, and we do buy a fresh vegies box in bulk purchase, sometime it is 3Kg but even up to 4.7Kg in one shoot. Plus some cooking ingredient and half-cooked ingredient, my refrigerator is seem not enough space to store the food well.
Thus, my first tips on purchase a refrigerator is : get a bigger capacity in your first purchase.
I personal think, 600Litres should be better and enough for a family of two, newly set up family and couples and even when the family grow up to 4 until 6 members if you cook almost everyday.
Second, the side-by-side refrigerator is in trend and look modern since the past few years. However, buy a two doors refrigerators is cheaper than the former. In my country, the 600Litre side-by-side refrigerator would cost about USD1,000 per unit while the tow doors type will only cost about USD600 per unit depends on brand.
According to my survey, both has the same functions, if you have limited budget and don’t want spend to much on the refrigerator. Or, you want to make your money worth and for getting more electrical equipment for your new kitchen rather than only holding the modern look side-by-side refrigerator, it is wise to get the two door type.
Go for better brand or those offers longer protection duration. Only those know well and have durable motor and good parts refrigerator manufacturer will confident and able to provider longer warranty period compared to those which is not good enough.
Look for good and long lasting brand. In my country, Japanese brand like Toshiba, Panasonic is the famous trusted brands while the Korean brand like LG,Samsung will offer fancy look and design. However, I would opt for middle price range and tursted brand for instead due to budget constraint and less headache after purchase.
This is my own opinion, hope it helps in your refrigerator purchase!

What do you mean by side by side type of refrigerator. Is it the one with just one door and when you open the freezer has also its own door inside?
My in-laws refrigerator has just "died" a few years ago. They said that it served them for more Than 35 years already. Wow, how's that for durability of a refrigerator. It is the two door and no frost type of refrigerator. The brand is Hitachi.
After that one died, we used our refrigerator which is as old as our daughter who is now 26. However, lately, it has been making a lot of frost already. Besides its door has no magnet anymore. It's by G.E. Though it could still be operational had it not been of too much frost already and the door has no more magnet to make it close.
Hubby's Auntie who lives with us plans to buy a big new one when her lump sum from SSS will arrive.
I must agree that those Japan made refrigerators are really so durable.
side-by-side means two doors on left and right. The one with a door inside has just launched newly in our country recently.
Your fridge seems not really well working now, need a replacement soon. Yes, agree with you, fridge can last about 25 years, so I think my one can last till I died...haha!
Good to have auntie to invest in the fridge for your family usage. Me always the one pay for the bill, even the T.V of my in law house...which I hate most...I think I will never do it again.
I will look for Japan made brand again in the future if upgraded is needed and must., but save money first. Haha!
You mean you bought your in-laws a television? But then of course they pay for their electric bill.
Well, at least you can consider the television as your gift to them .
You are a generous daughter-in-law. They must be so proud of you.
