I have recently been trying to get access to a certain type of therapy called DBT. This therapy is the ‘go to’ for people who have trouble with emotional instability and have been in the hospital a lot. Since I’ve had 8 hospitalizations in 2 years and already know a bit about the therapy – I’m considered the perfect candidate for it. Its taught like a group class rather than a supportive therapy group. I have some feelings against it but I had finally decided I was willing to do it.
I ran into a problem though. Unless I have a DBT therapist doing individual therapy with me, I can’t get into the group. My therapist isn’t a DBT therapist and there is no way I’m leaving her because she’s the first therapist I ever made progress with. This isn’t the first time I’ve been in a situation where I want services, but because I won’t do things exactly a way that fit a mold – I don’t get them. I don’t fit a mold, I’m an individual person! I don’t understand why…nevermind, I take that back…its easier to fit people into molds than to look at people as individuals who need to be matched to services than have services matched to them.
I had this happen once before – I was looking for art therapy. I went to a place where the intake therapist promised me art therapy and more AFTER an assessment. Turns out all they’d offer me is DBT and I’d have to leave my therapist for that. And that was only after the intake therapist lied to me and played me along for two months. Sometimes, it seems impossible to get the help I’m asking for.
So once again, I’m left to my own devices. Lucky thing I’m resourceful. I hunted down a free online course in DBT! It doesn’t have any of the peer interaction, but it teaches the skills. Most people would be in the dark about these things though, Its only because I’m so computer savvy and stubborn that I get access to things like this!
