The World: Half Poor And Half Rich

The great Abraham Lincoln once said that “a house divided cannot stand”. Indeed during the American Civil War the burning issue of the day was slavery. He is right. During those times America cannot go on forever half slave and half free.

Fast forward to 2017 and the remark of Abraham Lincoln is still relevant with regards to the imbalance of the level of economic growth and development throughout the world. Moreover, there is the unequal distribution of economic wealth in the world.

This is proven by the fact with respect to the classification of the various countries of the world into Develop Country, Developing Country and Least Develop Country. While these classifications may seem arbitrary, the fact remains that there is indeed inequality in terms of their level of economic growth and development.

Just recently today, there was news from CNN that almost 20 million people in Kenya, Yemen, South Sudan and Somalia are in danger of dying from diseases and famine as mentioned in the report of the United Nation.

It is ironic indeed that in some parts of the world there’s too much wealth and economic goods while in other parts of the world, the basic human needs such as food, shelter and clothing could not even be satisfied or met.

One may asked, why is this so? Why did we ever end up in this kind of present situation? Who is in control of the world’s wealth? Who is doing the distribution of the world’s economic wealth?

Beyond any economic consideration, the more important consideration is why there is so much suffering in our midst? It’s all about people suffering. People just like you and me and everybody else who have hopes and dreams.

As I look and ponder on the above picture, I cannot but ask and wonder: What will be the future of these children? Will they have a brighter future?

    • It is saddening that there are people in the world who could hardly have the necessities in life: food, clothing and shelter. What could their government been doing to alleviate the problem. Hopefully the United Nations or other rich countries will reach out to these poor people.

    • Yes you are right. It is really heart-breaking that there are so many people in other parts of the world that die from the absence of food, medicines and other basic necessities of life.

It's really very ironic that in some highly develop countries; there are so many surplus foods, clothing and other basic necessities.

So many people in the develop countries spend most of their money only for luxury goods or items, when in fact half of the world population are living in want and poverty.

There are so many factors, both man-made and otherwise, for us to understand why poverty is rampant in these countries in Africa.

There is the level of economic development, the current system of their government, graft and corruptions among its officials, the fact that most of these countries were colonies or has been colonized by foreign powers, its natural resources as well.

Yes, there must be concerted efforts on the part of their respective government, other foreign government and other international organization such as the United Nations and the International Red Cross in order to alleviate their plight and present conditions.

What is needed I think is political will to make it happen.
