The Fashions I Get To See In My Lifetime

Being already a 57 year old woman, I have seen a lot of fashion changes as I grow up.

In my grade school, the fashion was the latex jeans. I remember us , dancing in the field demonstration paired with a white blouse with 4 red circles, depicting our grade in elementary and that is grade 4.

I can still remember a word or two of a line from the music that accompanied our dance and it runs like “Bus stop , Wet days .. .” the rest I don’t know already.

I also remember using a whole dress, the skirt of which is like a loose short pants , which we call “hot pants”. If you will urinate, you have to open the zipper and have it down.

Then, there was the “elephant” pants in pastel colors, having a wide leg until its bottom. I wore that also.

At a time, the “bell bottom”, which were in denims was also the fashion. But this one was revived a decade ago under a different name that I can’t remember.

We also had the what we call “baston” or in English “cane” denim pants. But this kind of pants is the craze now, which we call the “skinny” pants.

As to shirts , I experienced wearing the “bonnel” shirt. This one wasn’t revived ever since though.

As to the hair, there was what we call the “spike” hairs and I remember Olivia Newton John having this kind of hair in one of his movies , which I think is Grease.

I had that kind of “spike” hairs too. It is actually on the bangs part of the hair which was made stiff by a spray net.

Though, this one was also revived now though for the men only.

Then, I also experienced the tissed hair, most specially on the bangs and top area of the hair too. A small toothed comb , is used to tiss the hair.

For the shoes, there was the wedge style of heels. But this one was also revived a year or two ago, and in fact , I also have them now amongst my shoes or sandals.

Oh, I remembered the wooden slipper that became the fashion. That one wasn’t revived since then though too.

And most of all , I remember the padded shoulders of the clothes of the men and women.

I remembered those “hippie” styles, where the men have long hairs and wear those bands around their hairs. Their clothes are those loose long sleeved colorful polos and bell bottom denim pants.

And their motto was “Make Love Not War”.

Of course, I was still a kid when the Beatles where the craze and grew up hearing those Beatle music being aired over the radios.

I also have heard the music of Elvis Presley, being played on the stereo by my father. Their music are in a what we call long playing “big” disc. The stereo is that thing with a dagger like thing that runs through the long playing disc to make it play.

Well, I am more than 5 decades old now. No wonder, I experienced these different fashions in clothes , hair, shoes , music and a lot more, I can’t remember now.

I guess, there are still some I haven’t mentioned. Maybe those of my age can still remember them, then please share it with us.

    • I am mostly in jeans and t-shirts or in shorts and t-shirts, because I am home most times. I still like the shape of bell bottoms and a skinny jean with a baggy shirts is comfy to wear. Sometimes I think fashion keeps going back instead of moving forward.

      • That is true. Fashion just keeps coming back though there are some twists already and under a new name.

I think that kind of get-up is here to stay. I also love being just in my jeans and shirt when I go out of the house to go malling or visiting my parents.

I think the denims or "maong" is here to stay forever. It is the craze then and until now and for the years to come. I feel young whenever I am in my faded denims. :)
