In my single days since college, I have a group of friends, composed of 5 girls.
One time while we were chatting and laughing , one of my friends which is also my cousin was fidgety. I noticed that she seemed to avoid my eyes for the past days.
So I asked her what is it that she wants to tell me because I can sense that she’s hiding something from me. Thus, she sheepishly told me something that really surprised me. And they all knew about it.
She said our 4th sister was pregnant. I was shocked because not one in our family knows nor noticed it. Besides, that sister of mine is the most shy type. Though, she already had a boyfriend so that is possible.
Then I recalled , one time I called the attention of that sister of mine while she was brushing her teeth that her stomach seemed to be big.
The fad that time was baggy pants so she reasoned it. I took it as it is.
But when my friend/cousin told me that, I know that it is true. Being the eldest of five girls, I was shocked and sad.
So when I got home, I secretly told my parents. My father didn’t say a word, because he knows that sister of mine is the most timid one.
At dinner, he told her to tell her boyfriend to let his parents come to the house but didn’t say anything about what I told him. My sister was so silent and nodded.
Thus, when the boyfriend and his parents came , my father told them that he will be arranging their marriage and they talked.
My sister and her boyfriend were in their 4th year College then, but that was the decision of my father and they were married.
During that time, pregnant women whose stomach are not yet so noticeable were permitted to be married at the church. Now, they don’t permit that. They can only be married after she has given birth.
It hurt the family, that everyone in town who knows us, knows about the pregnancy already, yet we don’t know about it.
And to think, my father is a lawyer and this happened to one of her daughters.
Ironic , but sometimes the family is the last to know.

Things happen, and sometimes we may not even have the words to explain it. We are a family were also in the same predicament only that this was my older sister who was in campus at the time. It was the most better pull for my mum to swallow when she found out. I remember i used to share a room with my sister at the time and i kind of noticed her frequent visits to the bathroom, and one morning I followed after her when she went to the bathroom, she didn't know that I followed her. A few minutes later I heard her vomiting and i was so shocked to the point of panicking. And that's when I decided to tell my mum about what was going on. My mum being a nurse at the time took the opportunity to talk to her and she admitted that she was pregnant. It was trully a shocker given that my sister was one of those kids who were well respected because she was quiet, loved God, and she was a good example to the rest of the kids in the estate. Being the very first child to join campus in the whole neighbourhood, that said something. So it happens usually it's the polite ones who normally do things that may shock many, unlike the unruly ones. At least for us I got to know about it before anyone else. They later got married and had two kids before she finally died may get soul continue to rest in peace.
