When I first seen this plant that resembled some sort of palm tree, I spent days trying to figure out the name of it. Many places on the internet indicated that it was called the Fan Palm, but it’s not. It’s called the Ravenala, and is also referred to as the Traveler’s Palm.
It originated from Madagascar. I had never seen this type of palm tree before, until we visited Cozumel, Mexico. They have this beautiful palm, to show the entrance of their cruise port, located in Puerta Maya.
This same plant is also found in San Juan, Puerto Rico. After further looking around on the net, I was surprised to find out that it’s not a palm at all. (probably the reasoning of why it took me so long to find out what it was).
It’s a member of the Bird of Paradise family, which is not classified as a palm. The average height is 23 ft., and until you see one of these in person, it’s beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. It’s absolutely stunning. I look forward to seeing these in Mexico, every time we take a cruise there.
It’s unknown as to how this plant got it’s name, but some think it might be because the actual fan section of the plant grows east & west, so it was thought to be used as a traveler’s compass. Some believe that maybe it got it’s name because the stem’s sheaths hold water when it rains, giving a traveler some water, however, DO NOT try to drink from this plant. The water it contains becomes dark and murky, and has a horrible odor.
I have no intention of drinking from it, or care how it got it’s name. I just enjoy the beauty that is has.

Nice plant, look like shaking his big hand to the visitor or travelers.
I love to have big plants in front of my house, but just not enough of land and no garden at home.
I have a dream to have such house in the next 10 years.
