Star Trek (TOS) (the original series) was not a success; until it went into syndication. When it was aired, although there was a fan base, although it had an impact on a generation, (many people went into NASA because of Star Trek), it only lasted three seasons, 1966 to 1969.
Hence, to ‘reboot’ this show seemed a bit of a risk. Until one saw the ratings.
Star Trek, The Next Generation, (TNG) aired from 1987 to 1994. It was a success every season.
It was the story, as the first, of the Star Ship Enterprise. It takes place in the year 2364, which was set one hundred years after the beginning of Star Trek (TOS).
The introduction of TOS was by William Shatner, Captain Kirk, who spoke of a ‘five year mission‘ which would ‘boldly go where no man has gone before.’
In TNG the introductory statement is by Patrick Steward, Captain Picard;
“Space: the final frontier. These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise. Its continuing mission: to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no one has gone before.”
The Cast for TNG was even more diverse than that of TOS. TOS presented its integrated cast with a bit of trepidation. TNG was bold. There was a Klingon on Board, a black navigator, an android, all sorts of other aliens along with a bit more intricate plots.
Captain Picard was not as much of a ‘cowboy’ as Kirk, an older man, less prone for drama and excitement. The Klingon, Worf, took the audience by storm. Everyone had always been interested in that ‘species’.
The Ferangi were introduced, and brought a bit of humour.
A lot of money was spent on the show, going for the best special effects, so that it was quality from start to finish.
It is an episodic show, although there are a few two parters. It is a show worth watching, even random episodes so as to know who Data is, and that he is the pattern of Android, and the culture of the Klingons, which are not two dimensional ‘alients’.
