Teen Pregnancy: Who’s Responsible?

Teen Pregnancy

With this kind of social problem, we are always pointing our fingers to those who are to blame. And who are they? Ask yourself for you might be one.

Anyway, we Filipinos our country is in the limelight as far as teen pregnancy is concerned recently according to the study. It declares that the Philippines is the only country in the Asia Pacific region where teen pregnancy is very high for the last 20 years. Do we need to be alarmed by this study or do we simply just ignore it? Why we have to worry about it? It is the Filipino teens’s parents or guardians to take care of this reality.

According to the study, the possible solutions are to implement the reproductive health law, to invest in quality education, and to provide health services for the youngesters.

Do you favor birth control, the use of contraceptives? I don’t think this would be realized. The Catholic clergies don’t approve to this approach. They don’t want using the unnatural methods to control birth. It is not only for business venture, but it is against the will of the God.

Does education could prevent if not totally control the rampant of teenage pregnancy? Population education has already been a part of the curriculum of education to both the public and private educational system. The elementary kids are taught the principle of reproductivity, fertitility, pregnancy. In their social studies, they learn the bad effects of population explosion.

This is something to be remedied. Klaus Beck, UNFPA Philippine representative pointed out that Filipino girls whose age range from 15 to 19 which is the 10 percent of the country’s population of 100 million, are among the pregnants. Some of them have already given birth, told the representative.

Solution: The Family

We do believe that the major solution for avoiding the rising of teen pregnancy is the family. If the father is doing his job as the head and the person in authority to his own family, young girls may become obedient to him. If the mother is consistently following up her daughters, early pregnancy of her daughter may be avoided. If brothers and sisters are also doing their constant communication, the pregnancy may be avoided too.

The family members should go together to the church. They should pray together. They should attend the Sunday School classes to make themselves aware of the thoughts and the will of the Lord to work for their salvation. They have to nurture their faith and have to prove for themselves as a family their sincerity and faithfulness to their covenant which they have made before and after their baptism.

Reading the scriptures as a family is one of the best wholesome activities. The father would lead the discussion and the mother would supplement it or enriched it with her experience and testimony. The children would also share their own interpretation of the verses on reading. They would try their best to practice what they have learned from the scripture to their way of life.

And foremost is the open communication among the members of the family would pave the way to developing trust and confidence among themselves. No problem wouldn’t be solved if this is done regularly, without any reservation and reluctance.

    • Some teenagers would always blame their family for getting pregnant. Is it always the case? Definitely, not. In the family, it is sources of having moral values inculcating the morality. However, dysfunctional family is also one of the factors why teenagers fall into teenage pregnancy.

Peer pressure is also one reason. There is also a study that some teens are suffering from mild mental retardation. Thus, teens are not capable of having a right decision and it can be easily influenced by external factors such as wrong people to be acquainted with. That's the reason why some parents cannot understand why their teens got pregnant at an early age. Despite telling good values to their children.

Teens are not like before. Now, they are more aggressive and explore new things in their lives. They can be influenced so easily and cannot resist temptations.

    • I agree with shavkat, it begins with the family morals what do you as afamily stand for when it comes to morality? Do you think giving kids freedom is the way to go, or do you think teaching about sex and intimacy in schools is appropriate? If you are able to choose and see what works well then you are good to go. But the thing is when you ar3 growing up as achild it's the moral obligation of the parents to teach the child about the immorality that is out there. If you are too busy to even talk to your children about sex then you have a problem because that is when the fund the opportunity to go and try out for themselves and the consequences are usually unwanted pregnancies as they call them.and when you finally approach them and start accusing them of being immoral or careless what do you think they will say "you never taught me anything or you never warned me that if I did this this would happen" and then the blame of course shifts back to the parent. So I would say both the parents and th3 children are to blame altogether because it's all about choices and when we make bad choices we have to live with the consequences.

    • With this kind of situation for the girl who is the victim of early pregnancy should be given the appropriate attention. There is no need to resort to finger pointing or blaming. The situation should be taken in its proper perspective in favor of the pregnant teenage girl. It is not only the embarrassing condition of the preggy but also the future of the child whom she carries with her on her tomb. Nothing could work if the culprit is run after for the blame, for the punishment to be imposed upon him.

Parents, guidance counselors, the representative from the welfare services should convene an take up this matter. Parents should be amendable for the advice and the suggestions given by the counselors, the representative if welfare. Parents have something to be accountable. There are times that they are not looking after for their girl. With that this particular incident do happen. But it is not yet too late to amend all those things in amiss.
