The Tale of Midsummer Night’s Dream: A Critical Analysis  

The politicians of Athens have passed this law that every daughter will marry according to their parents’ chosen person if any girl refuses to do so she was put to death in the arena. But this law proves very hard when the girls of the politicians refuse to marry the parents’ chosen persons. Yes, it was a very hard law for the parents in Athens.

Once in the court of Athens an old man whose name was Egeus that his daughter Hermia refused to marry Demetrius the chosen person of his father belongs to an Athenian royal family. Its main reason was that she loved Lysander another man of Athens’ royal family. Egeus requested the king to put this law in force against his disobedient daughter.

When the reality appeared that Demetrius loved another girl whose name was Helena and Helena also loved Demetrius with her heart and soul while Hermia loved Demetrius. Egeus compelled the prince to put to death his daughter because she disobeyed her father openly and it is against the law of Athens and laws are equal for all.

Theseus was the prince of Athens but he was merciful by nature and loved his subjects with his whole heart. The merciful prince gave four days to Hermia to reconsider her will keeping mind the law of marriage of Athens. At last after four days she refused to marry Demetrius and the matter remained the same as before.

After facing the prince in the court she went to her friend Lysander and told him the whole story about her death sentence and further said she will be hanged within four days if she does not obey the order to marry Demetrius.

Lysander was very upset listening to the story of Hermia and her death signal. He chalked out a plan and went to her aunt who lived away from Athens and that place was free of this cruel law.

He advised Hermia to flee with him from her house to her aunt’s house in the darkness of night where both will marry the next day. Now Helena you and come to see me at the appointed place and I will wait for you in the wood. Listening to this proposal Hermia was very happy and went o to her home and waited for the night darkness.

Helena knew that finding Hermia’s disappearance from her home Demetrius and Egeus both will follow her where she has gone: Egeus as father and Demetrius as future husband. The wood where Hermia and Lysander both were to meet to go to Lysander’s aunt was famous as the jungle of Fairies. The jungle was ruled by the king Oberon and the queen Titania and that night in the same jungle was the fairies’ midnight revels with their tiny trains.

Oberon and his queen Titania quarreled on a trivial matter at last to settle the matter Puck and sometimes he as called Robin the adviser was called was a wise man. Oberon said to Robin to come here and said to bring the flower of which name is love and girls call it love flower.

Robin went and brought the flower and prepared its juice and put in the eyes of Titania and the quality of this juice was that awaking from the sleep the first thing she will see will fall in his love either be beast or man and I will take the boy as my page over him you both are fighting for a long time. Robin went to pluck the flower from the jungle to deceive Titania the queen by the power of the love flower juice.

In the meanwhile Demetrius and Helena entered into the wood and reached before the king of fairy land Oberon was kind to the true lovers and helped them in difficult time. Oberon knew that Helena loved Demetrius and he had seen their love in the past. At the same time Puck returned with the purple flower of which name was lover flower.

Oberon said Robin that an Athenian lady is here and put some drops of love juice in her eyes after Oberon went from there giving Puck instructions. The fairies sand songs for Titania and after this Titania went to sleep in the flower wood and when she slept soundly the Oberon put some drops of love juice in her eyes.

After a short time Hemia entered into the wood where Lysander was waiting or her but looking at Hemia he came to know that she was very tired and Hermia slept and with her Lysander also slept away from her on the wood floor. When Puck crossed Hermia and Lysander both were sleeping quietly but looking at their clothes he came to know that both belong to Athens

Puck put some drops of love juice in the eyes of Helena because she was sleeping near her but Lysander did not know Helena is sleeping because Hermia was sleeping in simple dress and Helena was sleeping in Athenian dress that is why Puck put some drops of love flower in Helena’s eyes and first of all opening the yes she saw Lysander and fell in her love forever forgetting Hermia as he knew not her.

With the power of love juice Lysander was compelled to love Helena and both fled from there leaving all alone Hermia who was sleeping due to tiredness on the wood floor for a long time. When Hermia awoke and found herself all alone in the jungle and Lysander was not with her. She started searching for Lysander in the wood but there was no sight of Lysander in the fairy wood but in the meanwhile Demetrius come there and due to tiredness he slept on the wood floor.

In the meanwhile Puck came there and found that Demetrius was sleeping there due to tiredness on the floor and finding a good chance he put some drops of love juice in his eyes and went from there. When Demetrius awoke and roamed in the fairy wood to trace Helene but Helena had fled with Lysander instead of Helene he found Hermia on the way and first of all after sleeping he saw Hermia and fell in her love forever for getting Helena his former love like Lysander forgot Hermia he forgot Helena and fell in love of Hermia to whom he wanted to marry.

Luckily the four persons gathered in the wood Helena and Hermia, Demetrius and Lysander but wonderfully both had changed love Helena loved Lysander and Demetrius loved Hermia. All wondered how this happened within a day how they changed love in the wood.

In the meanwhile Puck came there and told them that he pouted love juice in your eyes wrongly that is why Helena loved Lysander and Hemia loved Demetrius it is my mistake not your and luck. When all went the king fairy kingdom said to Puck did you do this mischief knowingly or unknowingly tell me true Puck. It is my mistake but you told me that an Athenian lady is present in the wood and put some love juice in her eyes but Athenian dress Lysander was wearing and that is why I put some drops of water in his eyes. That is why awaking he saw Helena and fell in her love.

Now the king asked Puck where Lysander and Demetrius have gone he said to fight in the jungle to decide his love quarrel now the king Oberon said put some juice of anti spell in both of men’s eyes when they fell asleep. So they sleep and Puck some drops of anti love spell in their eyes and when they awoke they forgot their former love and started following the former love in the wood.

When all awoke from their sleep they were normal as were before Hermia married Lysander and Demetrius married Helena in the wood. After this Oberon’s and Titania’s quarrel was settled and at the same time Hermia’s father reached in the wood in search of his daughter was happy to see the four persons reconciled in the wood.
