Taking Meat Out of Your Diet

For many people, the idea of becoming a Vegetarian is like flying to the moon on a broomstick… impossible.

This is because they have never explored non-meat alternatives or tried to go ‘cold turkey’, that is, stop eating all meat today and then wondering why they feel so strange next week, and run for that slab of dead animal.

How to remove meat from your life Slowly?

It is easy to remove meat from your diet if you give yourself one year to do it.

Keep a record of how much meat you eat in a week.

Do you have three meat meals a day?  Two?  Drop it to one.  One meat meal a day.

Breakfast is cereals, lunch is salads, and dinner is meat, or lunch is meat and dinner is salads or meat substitutes.

Once you are fully comfortable with the one meat meal a day,  begin to find substitutes.   Tofu, vegemince, etc.  Treat fish as non-meat.   Continue to eat eggs and milk products.

In this way you won’t feel deprived nor shock your body by the sudden removal of meat.

By getting new recipes for non-meat dishes and incorporating them into your diet, move to a meatless day.

Tomorrow you can have that steak you lust for, or those burgers, but not today.

Once you have been able to ‘survive’ a meatless day every week, move it to two meatless days a week.

Take your time, you have a year.

Eventually you will have three then four meatless days.  This is because by weaning yourself from meat slowly you will develop and enjoyment of non meat meals.

As time passes you move to the point where you eat meat twice a week, then once.

You begin to treat eggs as meat so that you start to remove them from your diet.

You might retain fish, but no pork, beef, lamb, chicken etc.

You can have smoothies for lunch, carry your lunch from home, but eventually, if you move slowly without pressure, you won’t want to eat meat.

    • As you had emphasized, it is easy to say of not going to meat in every meal. For some reasons, some people cannot do it because meat is so inviting for their appetite. Others would prefer to eat a well-balanced diet. I guess the palates of these people cannot resist the taste of a meat.

I bow my head to vegetarians for a strong determination. It wasn't bad since some food is being modified that tastes like meat. The main ingredient is veggie. I had seen some and there is no difference to real meats served on the table.

      • You must realise that meat is an acquired taste. It depends on what you are fed as a child. If you live near the sea and eat fish, if you live on a farm and eat produce, etc.

So many people in this world rarely taste meat. In America the over consumption of meat makes them believe it is normal to have bacon and eggs for breakfast, a box of KFC for Lunch and a steak for supper. It isn't.

        • I had known it is in the culture of the country. We were been colonized by Americans before. Some of their practices are still being used in the country that includes the food preferences.

          • The sad part is that Americans have moved to a very unhealthy diet with all the adulterated 'fast food'. Not to elevate the hot dog or the hamburger, but these used to be pure beef. Making a burger out of sirloin was a selling point.

Now, not only is it meat.. with all the draw backs... it is adulterated... pink slime, unsavoury bits, other kinds of meat... etc.

    • This is excellent advice for anyone who wants to make any kind of dietary change, for whatever reason. Changes made in a slow and gentle way are more likely to become permanent because the person doesn't feel deprived.

    • Too many people try to do it all at once and fail. I recall (this is funny) two people who are carnivores decided to 'go vegetarian' and stopped eating meat and after there big challenge they went back within a week saying they filled up with gas.

It struck me so funny that these two overweight people could try to 'go vegetarian' over night.

    • It is a matter of self-discipline in terms of foodies temptations. At some point, it is their choice to modify their lifestyle. It is also given that they turned into eating unhealthy diet because of their lifestyle.

In my country, we have the choice to have a well-balanced diet. The tropical islands can offer raw ingredients to have a healthy great meal. However, the local people will not always have the same thinking in indulging to healthy lifestyle. It is still a choice.

      • In my country we used to eat healthy. We used only pure coconut oil, we ate fresh ground provision or just caught fish. Then in came the Mcdonalds, the Burger King and whatever else. People began to eat junk.

They stopped drinking coconut water or juice, began swallowing soda.

We never had diabetes in Jamaica. Now, every other person does.

        • That's the sad part brought to us of modernization.I always had this special hobby that traveling in the countryside. The reason, I just want to escape from the modern city and enjoy the tranquility of the countryside and eat simple healthy food. I do agree with you that people had changed through years with the advancement of technology nowadays.
