Strategies applied for getting the best bargain at the second hand goods centres

I love to visit and buy something second hand or so called “antique” things in the second hand goods market/shop, not only because of lower the cost, but also the story behind the goods.

Sometimes we might fail in the “ treasure hunting ” mission, and be the loser for either buying the fake antique or being conned by the seller, and just brought those unworthy things home.

Here with some tricks or tips on how to get the best deal or bargain in such markets. Good luck!

  1. Garage sale but not flea market. The flea markets which constituted by professional sellers will request for higher selling price as possible. Thus, it’s always hard to have a best price or bargain for something we love to buy.

Thus, it’s better to go to garage sale which the sellers are those second hand stuffs owner itself, so they just want to let go something don’t needed anymore or unwanted and stayed in their garage for long time. They will be happy if someone willing to take their used goods home instead of carrying them home and put back into their garage for another long period.

In my country, there are quite a number of second hand goods centres which run by the charity groups, and the public will donate those unwanted goods to them for selling and support the daily expense of the charity groups. And, we have very little of garage sale here for instead, but only flea markets in certain old towns.

Hence, I prefer go and visit these second hand goods centres for best bargain, they have almost everything which donated from the public, and they won’t might to sell it at a lower price as they needs cash for daily running fund. And, I am happy to make donation in such way too.

  1. Right time. There is some specific perfect timing to get the lovely and antique things. According the experiences of most of the buyers, one of the perfect timing is early of the morning when the centre open for business, the centre has collected some things “new” to the customers before closed the day before, thus the buyers will able to grab for something new on the rack.

Second perfect timing is after the collection trucks come back to the centre which will bring back some new stuffs to the centre from the public. Thus, most of the professional buyers are waiting and keep their eyes on the things from the trucks.

  1. Right season. Every business has it own cycle, so does the second hands collection centre too. The peak season of second hand centres is when the public is clearing their extra and unwanted goods at home especially when it is end of the season of end of the year.

General public love to housekeeping and clear their store room during the year end, and start to buy again the next year.

Thus, the second hand centres are full with such unwanted goods during that particular season, but have little things to sell in the early of a new year.

Again, good luck to you, the buyers, as treasure hunting is really by luck, rather than only strategies, indeed.

    • You have a taste for antiques my friend. I don't.

Even with the designs of houses, I am not into the antique ones. I like the contemporary ones with minimalist touch, so the house will have the illusion of being spacious.

I don't like furniture that are darkly colored mostly brown as antiques are. I like furniture that have colors that makes the house appear bright and spacious.

But good thing I don't have a taste for antiques because they are expensive. he he he

    • Dear @Dina, thanks for reading and commenting my blog. I love to have you here.
I believe you going to cash out this month end too, right? Glad to seeing it happened to you and me.
The reason why I love those old stuffs, first, I think it is a waste if just throw them away or into the dustbin. It is not environment friendly, and wasted of the limited resources we have on the earth, right?
It just a choice of lifestyle, yeah, I go for postmodern style too sometimes, it depends. You are right, we are all try to be minimalist touch, but having said that, I think my house is a bit messy with some old books stuck in my book shelves recently, sigh!
Again, you are right again, I think my hunted goods are not antique too, as I am not affordable, I just shopped and hunted for old and unwanted goods of other, I guess. Haha!

    • I love second hand hunting someone's trash is someone's treasure goodwill stores are a great source of second hand treasures. I've got a friend that was remodeling her kitchen she wanted a unique island and found a second dresser made of cherry she sanded down restrained and put a granite top on now it is the showpiece of her kitchen. Yard sales are great spots for hunters as well. Nothing like finding a nice piece taking it home and making it into a great piece of furniture.
