Broad bean is also known as Fava Beans or Faba Beans.
The pods of broad beans resembles a silkworm which is the reason why Chinese community named it “ Silkworm beans”.
Broad beans are bigger than green peas, the same shape of French beans pods but bigger in size and puffy.
Broad beans are naturally sweet and crunchy.
Basically used in Chinese and American cuisine, sometimes deep fried for snacking purpose.
My Story
I first knew that broad beans ever existed was when I had gall stones in my gall bladder.
Besides walnut, it was known that broad beans could reduce the pain caused by gallstones in the gall bladder.
Although it doesn’t reduce the number of stones in the gallbladder, broad beans became my comfort food when I was in pain.
I couldn’t consume any food that is hard to digest since the bile duct is stucked with the stones, causing over flowing bile fluid that gave me agony.
Hence, I bought a lot of raw broad beans sold in large packets, imported from Japan over the few months of agony.
Before I had my laparoscopic surgery( removal of gall stones and gall bladder ), I could eat Stir Fry Broadbeans with Spring Onions daily without fail.
Once the broad beans are boiled or steamed under high heat, the beans became soft and easily chew alike soft tofu.
Hence, these beans which are high in protein and fibre, gave me the nutritions that I needed since I could consume brown rice nor meat dishes.
Honestly, broad beans are even tasty when you steam them in the steamer.
Just sprinkle a little salt over them, toss lightly is sufficient to brighten up your appetite that you had lost.
In addition, broad beans are beneficial for weight watchers who are trying to lose weight.
You don’t have to fast or go on strict diet with meats either.
Just cut those fats and skins off the chicken or pork meat, slice into long strips, roughly a tablespoon full and stir fry with broad beans , season with light soy sauce will do.
I have to admit that I am not a professional at cooking beans recipe but this broad beans with spring onion was the simplest and quickest recipe I had achieved during my gallstone agony.
What can broad beans do for you
– cure constipation
– promote fluid excretion for the spleen
– reduce gallstone pain
– Recent research claimed that broad beans can reduce chances of contracting Parkinson disease
Ingredients:
– 1 bowl of fresh broad beans in pods
– 1 stalk of spring onions, cut into sections
– salt to taste
1)Open the pods , extract the broad beans.
2)Rinse well.
3)Bring a steamer to boil, steam the broad beans until soften.
4)Wash the spring onions.
5)Cut into sections, separate the white and the greens
6)Heat up wok with a little oil.
7)Stir fry the white part spring onion first.
8)Add in the steamed broad beans and green part of the spring onions.
9)Stir fry for a while.
10)Add in a little salt.
11)Add in a little water to moisten the dish.
12)Turn off heat.
13)Serve with roasted chopped ham if you prefer.
