Spent a Day With the Mentally Challenged and Felt Rewarded

Each year we throw a party for poor kids at Christmas time and this year I ventured to have a party for the mentally challenged. I was not sure how it would turn out specially when their behaviour would not be predictable.
I sort the help of their guardians in that Institute. Happy to say all went well and I broughtback with me happy memories.
Even while buying gifts for them I was recommended that I do not go for pens or pencils but instead that which will help them be creative in the area of handicrafts.

When they entered the hall – they were 85 of them – the first thing they spotted were the balloons that were strewn on the floor. Their mood changed and they rushed to pick them up and this even by those who age-wise were adults.
I was told they are categorised not based on their age but their mental capacity in that even those in their teens would be placed in the lower K G category.

I noticed they loved dancing and each time they heard the music they would come on the floor and dance to the rhythm perfectly.
None of them touched the gifts that were displayed to be distributed to them later which meant they had some sense of responsibility.
Each child I was told needed a different kind of approach and for this the caretakers spend a lot of time getting to know them one by one.
Most, I was told were born with these defects and there was little that could be done to bring them to normalcy although an attempt is made to search for that faculty they were good at and train them in that field.

No doubt they would need a watch to be kept on them but with proper direction these children could atleast fend for themselves in areas they are good at.

For me it was a day well spent and a memorable one.

    • It would be a great idea to spare some time and to have the company of these little souls. These souls just need our attention.

Spending some time with them will surely mitigate their sufferings and sorrows.

    • That's really a good deed to do for special kids.I had once tried this kind of sacrifice and live along with them.Traveling is the best part of my life with a purpose.I traveled a long journey in Central Asia and rendered my medical service to children with various disabilities and impairments. It was a novel thing to decide not for myself but to share my professional skills to medical doctors in the country. Some people might think differently as a volunteer across the border. All I can say, things been a good way to start showing love all-year round.

During the path of being a volunteer, I had realized the importance of volunteerism. It wasn't the grandeur but the simple life living with unfortunate souls.I left behind a Guide Book and still continued to be used.My heart jumps with glee when remembering this happy thought with so many challenges faced in my journey.A simple email for those people whom I touched still remembers me.

If I could have the chance to try such nobility, I would continue to do it.In time, I would be able to finalize the Guide Book that I had created and be shared in a wide range.I am not after with the fame but to share things up to people with disabilities.I wanted to continue their lives in a normal way and no need to expect something grandeur from them.

    • This is really touching. I love hearing about how others care. And it's good to show this special kids that there just as special as anyone else. Yeah they may seem different but at the same time they still have a heart like we do. And it truly touches my heart to see others caring for the special needs.they should receive the same attention and respect as we do. If anything we should show kids like this just a lil more attention. Care for them in everyway we can. Don't treat them different because their different. They still deserve a chance in life. It's okay to hug them show them love they need it more than we do...Most important their still humans and we as people should never forget that.
