Song of the Day – Day 6 – Hozier – Take me to Church

Before I start this post, I need to point out the obvious that I haven’t been on for a few days. I have been super busy in work as I am covering 2 people who are off as well as trying to do my own work.  Needless to say, I am struggling to post daily but I am going to post my songs of the day. They might not be posted on the right day but there will be one for every day in April none the less.

This song is song 6 and it is Hozier – Take me to Church.

This is a much more modern song than I usually post about but it is still one I love. This song written and released by Hozier in 2014. This was his debut single and was recorded in his attic after a bad breakup. He wasn’t signed at this point but the demo caught the eye of independent music label Rubyworks who then signed Hozier up and released the single.  The single got to number 1 in many countries including Austria, Czech Republic, Italy, and many others but only got to number 2 in the UK and the US but for a debut single that’s not too shabby.  It was also certified triple platinum in the UK and 5x Platinum in the US, as well as going platinum multiple times in 11 other countries and further 3 countries.

Here are the lyrics:

My lover’s got humour
She’s the giggle at a funeral
Knows everybody’s disapproval
I should’ve worshipped her sooner

If the heavens ever did speak
She’s the last true mouthpiece
Every Sunday’s getting more bleak
A fresh poison each week

“We were born sick,” you heard them say it

My church offers no absolutes
She tells me, “Worship in the bedroom.”
The only heaven I’ll be sent to
Is when I’m alone with you

I was born sick
But I love it
Command me to be well
Aaay. Amen. Amen. Amen.

[Chorus 2x:]
Take me to church
I’ll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies
I’ll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife
Offer me that deathless death
Good God, let me give you my life

If I’m a pagan of the good times
My lover’s the sunlight
To keep the Goddess on my side
She demands a sacrifice

Drain the whole sea
Get something shiny
Something meaty for the main course
That’s a fine-looking high horse
What you got in the stable?
We’ve a lot of starving faithful

That looks tasty
That looks plenty
This is hungry work

[Chorus 2x:]
Take me to church
I’ll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies
I’ll tell you my sins so you can sharpen your knife
Offer me my deathless death
Good God, let me give you my life

No Masters or Kings
When the Ritual begins
There is no sweeter innocence than our gentle sin

In the madness and soil of that sad earthly scene
Only then I am human
Only then I am clean
Ooh oh. Amen. Amen. Amen.

[Chorus 2x:]
Take me to church
I’ll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies
I’ll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife
Offer me that deathless death
Good God, let me give you my life
