Sonagiri temple is a sacred place for the Jains (a community in the Hindu society). It is located 60knm away from Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh. It is a nice soothing place and at the same time holds a lot of importance for the Jains.
The word Sonagiri means “THE GOLDEN PEAK” and this place does true justice to its name. With a scattered bundle of white temples all around the mountain and on the peak stand as a true example of the so called golden peak.
It is said that this was the place where King Nanganag Kumar stayed for years trying to achieve liberation from the cycle of death and life. It was believed to have 15 million followers at that time. The place is very sacred for the devotes and most of them come here on regular basis.
The place has 77 temples in all , each and every varies in size and looks . Though each temple is worth a visit and has something or the other in peculiar but the temple number 57 is considered as the main temple. It has an idol of Lord Chandraprabhu which is approximately 11 feet high. It also has two other idols of Lord Sheetalnath and Lord Parsvnath. All three of these look divine and render a positive and attractive aura.
There is a verandah just opposite to the idols where devotees can sit peacefully and render their prayers. The place is huge and big enough to accommodate hundreds of people at a time.
This is the residing place of many renowned saints which live here and practice salvation. They also learn spiritual qualities like self control and self discipline. It is believed that all this help them to reach ‘Nirvana or Salvation” in life.
The entire aura gives a mesmerizing feel. The great view from the peak of the mountain is something one can never forget in lifetime. The widespread greenery with lovely and soothing wind makes you feel out of this world. The entire climbing route from the ground is well paved and made of non slippery flooring. It is very convenient to climb up but still arrangements are available for people who are still unable to climb.
Sonagiri temples are a beautiful place situate don the hills. It is good place to visit for a single days outing. But for those who prefer to stay back there are many lodging facilities which are available a swell. It is an easy to reach place with good roads and conveyance facilities.
Once you visit this place you will not regret your decision for sure. It is a place where you can surely spend good quality time with your family. Apart from leisure and vacation this place also holds a prime devotional aspect. Looking at the number of devotees visiting this place one can imagine the sacredness the place holds and the faith and devotion the pilgrims have towards this place. Do not forget that this is the place that has helped millions to gain salvation and many come here every day to try to do so.
