Some People Have No Life Beyond Work

Although every employer will laud this hardworking employee; the tragedy is that when someone lives at work this means they have nothing to go home to.  This means the job is their life.   Without the job, they don’t exist.

A normal person has a life.

Think of kids, they have their families, they have their friends, they go to school, they come home to their lives. School is not their lives.  Their lives are happening beyond the walls.

Think of college students.  The school is the foundation but there is a whole bunch of life going on outside of the class rooms.

Then, the normal person.  The house or flat, the neighbours, their friends, their interests, their social life, the job filling a third of their day for five days, and once quitting time hits, they are into their lives.

Some people wind up so busy at work that they don’t have much of a social life.   This continues until they don’t have a social life.

They think about work, they go, their live there.  They don’t rush to leave.

I recall a chap who was to be at work at 9 and leave at 5.    He would reach at 7, (to avoid traffic) he said.  He’d stay until 7, (same reason).   During the time before work and after, he did some computer play, but he did a lot of work.

Sometimes he’d come in on week ends.

As time passed and he moved towards retirement he wangled a ‘contract’ so that he could continue to work on a ‘temporary permanent’ basis.   When he died no one was at his funeral except those from the office.

He became the talking point.   Why didn’t he seise life when he had the chance?   Why did he embrace the job as if he had been ‘adopted’ and turn it into his surrogate family?
