Schooling took the Gold in 100 M Butterfly swimming event. This was Singapore’s first gold medal in any Olympics. This swimmer is 21 years of age.
Interestingly this player beat his childhood swimming idol Michael Phelps who has won nearly 20 medals in the Olympics so far, and five (including four golds) this year. Schooling had met Phelps when he had visited Singapore in the year 2008. The media even has a photograph of a young 13 year old Schooling meeting Michael Phelps.
How great Schooling would have felt on winning the race, but also beating his idol, as well as being able to meet him in person, and get some good tips.
Another interesting fact about this 100 M buttrfly win was that Three guys- Michael Phelps of United States, South Africa’s Chad Le Clos and Hungary’s Laszio Cseh tied for the silver (I wonder why no bronze was given- are there some rules relating to this?)
Joseph Schooling has been training in United States as have been many athletes and sportspeople from around the world. He has also been studying at the University of Texas in Austin(Texas) since 2009, when he was 14 years of age.
His trainer there has been Eddie Reese who was two times US Olympics men’s head coach.
That Singapore can help its players achieve this feat ought to come as an inspiration even for India.
One cannot blame the Indian contingent for the failures to win the medals so far, but the administration, the support system and the overall lack of a sports culture is something that needs to be overhauled in India.
How many of us in India would be ready to have our kids become sportspersons, rather that being Doctors, Engineers, Chartered Accountants, or Managers?
