Should I Be Proud of Her?

A woman is the helpmeet of a man. She is taken from one of the man’s ribs, near to his heart in order to be loved, nor to be crushed for it’s not taken from the foot, nor to be boxed for it’s not taken from the hand. These are some of the illustrations of a Church minister whom I know. He’s  right.

And this is also I realized how my late father treated our mother. Though there were times that they had a misunderstanding and had a disagreement over a minute thing, but they could easily reconcile each other. My father as a good provider for our family had helped her in the preparation and cooking of our day-to-day meals.

Now, they’re both gone. We couldn’t do anything to make them happy, but to recall their exemplified love and care to all of us their children. Our late mother couldn’t be easily forgotten for her ingenuity, her wisdom. She had never neglected us as what some mothers were doing to their children. She won’t fail us in our wholesome growth and development of what we are right now.

My Mother’s Legacy

She thought me on how to sing for she had a very good voice. One late afternoon, I recall she sang with me while I was singing two of our dialect songs, “Dandansoy” and “Ahay Kalisud“. I felt happy as she sang along with me. There were also some English and Spanish love songs she knew. She beautifully interpreted them. I enjoyed listening to her singing.

She was also a good teacher, especially in Math. She overheard me memorizing the different table of multiplication from the table of 2 to 10. She taught me on how to do it simply. What had surprised me, she multiplied the numbers by actually not multiplying. She did it in a short-cut way through the process of addition.

Though my father is a great provider for all what we need in life, our mother is more than that. The meager wage of my father received every month is not sufficient to support 8 of us in the family. She’s apt to secure some financial resources and be able to make end meets. She never ever had missed our special events in life like our birthdays, baptism, and much more. That is how thoughtful our mother is.

She’s a good disciplinarian. My brothers and sister had never been spared from the wrath of a disciplinary stick. We had been threatened to be flagged by the stick if we don’t behave well. She pointed out to us our limitations especially on what to do and what not. She imposed a discipline on us after relating our failures, shortcomings.

She had never left me unattended when I was sick. She wanted me to quickly recover from my illness. I was too weak when I was a kid. I had a weak body resistance. I could get easily sick when exposed to a bad weather when eaten foods which couldn’t be readily digested.

    • Too bad she did not pursue a career in singing.
If she were born in this generation, she could earn from making videos of her songs to upload to Youtube, and earn from there.

    • @scheng1, that is alright. In her time, there was not YouTube or facility to record her voice and upload on the Internet or any social media. Her singing talent was kept by herself. She used it when making us when we were kids to let us fall asleep. Our second elder brother inherited her good singing voice. He is an operatic singing. He used to sing the songs made popular by Mario Lanza like Granada, Because, Arrivederci Roma to name a few.
