Seasonal depression, how to get help.

When changing seasons, also changes the nature of our physiology, our psyche. Trees are changing colors of the leaves, then lose their leaves and preparing for the winter rest until spring. Our body also reacts to the changing cycles of the earth: the days is getting shorter, it becomes colder, darker, due to lower solar intensity. We change our diet, we wear warm clothing. Some of us regret that summer is over. Some people find that with the changed season also changes mood, it falls down. They are having trouble to get out of bed or feel like energy reduction. Seasonal mood disorder often occurs in autumn, and sometimes it is called winter depression. It may seem that this is depression, except that the important role is due to seasonality, an obvious season’s change, transition from the warm sunny weather to a long cold days period, less bright days period. Mostly it feels people living in northern latitudes.

With changing seasons, changing and our hormonal system, it must adapt to the light loss. Seasonal emotional disorder affects many more women than men, and this may be related to women’s greater sensitivity to hormonal changes. Light deficiency unbalances the hormones, responsible for sleep and mood. Seasonal depression is characterized by depressed mood, decrease of working capacity and constant feeling of fatigue, resulting at a certain time of the year.

Seasonal symptoms regularly repeated at the same time every year. Do not rush to prescribe yourself the diagnosis that you already suffer from depression, that you have seasonal emotional disorder. Monitor your emotional well-being, pay attention to how long have you feel bad.  The most common seasonal depression is mild, moderate.  However, some patients with severe form of this depression are necessary to get treating in hospital.
