Safety measures form an important part of travel. When we undertake any travel we have to see that certain standard practices are followed by the person travelling so that the journey will be a safe and memorable one for ones lifetime and there will be nothing for one to despair. Travel can be by different modes like Air, rail, bus, ship, car or in some cases even by foot. Here we are not trying to focus on any one particular mode of transport but are going to concentrate on safety measures which will be applicable universally to different modes of transport. Here are the details mentioned below.

Whenever we are going to travel, generally we have our tickets to travel confirmed and will confirm both the onward as well as the return journey. Look at me if I have to travel I see to it that both my onward and the return journey are confirmed and rechecked before 24 hours of travel. This is required as any change in schedule may mean change of plans and the service provider will be providing you options or alternatives. But make sure that when you are going on your onward journey the return journey too is confirmed.

Avoid changing plans once you have decided the dates. Why this is required is because if you are disciplined and follow a method all through your life people and relatives understand about the same and respect your view and would see that your plans are not disturbed by them. And all the parties that is you, your family members and the place where you are visiting are all clear about your plans. They are doubly sure too that it will not simply change.

Avoid being fickle minded and keep changing your plans and dates for one reason or another unless it is something very important. Do that only if you get a ticket confirmed never ever travel on a waitlist or RAC ticket if it is a train journey. If it is by flight or bus too always travel by confirmed tickets as they give you peace of mind and you will not be in for any shocks at the time of travel at the bus, railway station or airport.

Pack your bags at least a week before the journey keep every thing ready in one place as you will not run helter skelter around in the last moment. If it is a journey of say three to four days 3 trousers and four shirts and three t shirts would be sufficient plus other clothes. Pack toiletries too that is your soap, shampoo talcum powder, sprays or deo, shaving cream, toothpaste, blades, tooth brush etc. This will save you lot of time at the place where you are going.

Avoid carrying too much of luggage as carrying too much of luggage is a nuisance which is worth being avoided. If you have lots of luggage count you luggage pieces, see that the weight does not exceed the amount set by the transport authorities. If you are having more declare the same before and see that you pay the additional charges and collect the receipt. While getting down too count the pieces which are with you and ensure you have not forgotten anything. See that the suitcase is locked and is chained and locked to the rods below the train seats as thefts are common. Avoid keeping money, valuables and jewels in your luggage and avoid wearing them too. Keep them in your personal hand bag and always keep it with you.

See that you prepare slips where your address and contact number and the person to be contacted plus your name and contact number too are written put this inside the luggage and paste one on the side below of each luggage. Keep one set in the house too and inform the party where you are going too about travel details. Paste it in such a way that others are not able to view it easily. Do not keep food stuff in you luggage inside the briefcase as it may spill and damage your clothes and other items too. Keep a separate bag for food stuffs.

Avoid consuming too much of food while on journey, eat light and stay light it will be of great help to you. You can always eat a full plate after reaching your destination and then relax.  Best things to eat are curd rice, chapatis, biscuits or plantains. Carry water from the house. If you have medicines on a regular basis see to it that the ones you eat in the train are kept in your pocket as you can get them easily and consume on time.  Keep the other set which you are supposed to consume in the place where you are going  in a safe and dry package in you luggage. If your are on a 3 day trip take a stock of around 15 days to 20 days with you and also carry the doctors prescription and medical file with you. Should you need it you will have it ready with you.

Do not have a sound sleep and try to sleep a bit late and get up a bit early. You can always go to the place once you reach your destination and catchup with some sleep and then sleep early in the night to give rest to yourself. Avoiding taking packages from strangers if they say please keep it with you I will be back in a few minutes as even though we would want to help people the world has changed so it is better to be alert. Alert the authorities if you find suspicious objects. Avoid foods given by other passengers while travelling. There are many instances of foodstuffs laced with sedatives being served and you fall asleep and when you wake up you will be sleeping in an empty compartment with all your luggage and valuables gone. Many thieves are coming as passengers with tickets and all.

Know the numbers of the security which you have to contact to before boarding the train or bus. Check the places or stations when you are on the move so that you have an idea of where you actually are. Avoid quarrel and arguments with co passengers. Immediately on reaching the compartment or your seat in the bus. I have observed it does take some time for people to settle down and when spoken to at that time they are far reasonable.  Whichever the journey reach the station or airport at least one hour before the actual check in time. You may feel it is wastage of time but it is not so as there are many instances of airline check in counter having been closed or passengers having got stuck in traffic jams on the way to the railway or bus stations.

All of us would have traveled but many tend to forget things when they are done in a hurry or at the last minute like forgetting the tickets, passport, train tickets other identification to be carried etc. If you are a frequent traveler and do not know when your next travel would be please pack a bag for a trip of three days and keep it ready. Even see to it that you travel only on confirmed tickets. Always have travel and accident insurance.

Last but not the least in the case of some unfortunate accident do not panic and first try to save yourself not the luggage. Your life is important so is the life of co passengers. Please help them if possible. Make sure you call family and tell them of the situation clearly and tell them not to panic and make you panic. Keep a calm composure as that helps others too in times of adversity.

Choose the trains, bus or flights as per your convenience as some people find morning travel comfortable while some find night time comfortable. Have a safe and happy journey whenever your next journey is. Do you like to travel if so what is the more of transport you would prefer?  Share your memorable experiences.
