Moscow is a city where people go for fun travel today but it was not so when I went there. It was still the Union of Soviet Socialist Republic going through a hard time. But the scenario has changed entirely now. Moscow is now known for its night life which one could not even imagine during that time.
Russia was then known as country behind iron curtains a country not many people knew much about. Hearing the name of Moscow reminded of Ian Fleming and James Bond and KGB etc. In fact, Russia had everything that the tourists look for but the policies of the Russian government mad the place mysterious therefore people went there only when necessary.
I have seen only two cities of Russia Moscow and Saint Petersburg. I lived in Moscow for a long time but Saint Petersburg for a small trip of two days only. I must admit that while leaving India I was told not to go out unless necessary outsiders roaming on the streets was not a common scene those days. Although it’s not the same anymore but I often took a chance and went out with my local friends.
I did not stay long outside in the city for longer durations but I visited almost every place worth visiting and was surprised to see the way they maintained their buildings, parks and cultural heritage from the past. In fact it made me feel bad when I thought about our own buildings which are no lesser but the way we maintain and keep them makes all the difference.
I took chance almost every week and went out to see a different place with a willing local colleague by a bicycle in most cases that I had bought first thing at my arrival in Moscow. That bicycle was a great help for my visits to places like Kremlin Fort, State Museum, Parks, Moscow River, Diamond Fund Exhibition and number of other places.
