Roses think no end of themselves. They always want a pride of place in any garden. Little do they know that they are not regular bloomers and when they remain dormant they look ugly. They play possum too in that they look dead and the owner gets the temptation to pull them out but suddenly there will be a healthy shoot popping out from below.l
Cultured roses mounted on a briar rose needs careful handling as in the first two years the briar rose will try to kill the plant that has been grafted on it.
Roses need to be fed at regular intervals their soil changed atleast once a year. There is the never ending problem of pests that sometime need strong pesticides to rid of them.
With all these problems however gardeners cannot do without roses.
I have a few that yield periodically. Many have died but I have not lost hope. I keep buying new plants as just as any gardener I too feel a garden without roses is no garden at all.
My best rose is what I call pride of Solitaire.
This was the only rose that bloomed on this plant with such grandeur. Rest seem insignificant compared to this one.
Then I have what I have named as yellow dew. The dew is visible on it. I clicked this early one morning.
The pristine white is one plant that does not need much care and it yields pretty well. It stays on the plant for several days.
Then I have this peach colour which belongs to the Catherine family. I had eight colours in them but now I am left with only one. Catherine grows through cuttings and needs very little care.
I do not use artificial fertiliser for my roses. I prepare my own compost and use it. Same is the case with getting rid of pests. I use wood ash for the purpose.
There are countries and parts of India where roses bloom profusely and that for me is a distant dream.

Those are beautiful roses. I love the dark pink ones. My father used to have rose bushes all along the side of the house that I grew up in and he would be very attentive to them all through the summer. We had one that smelled like raspberries and it was my favorite one. I hope you are one day able to have all the roses you want.
Growing roses where I live is not easy. There is one thing I have learnt and that is they look dead but spring back to life on their own.
Thank you for sharing this. I am really glad to learn more about growing roses. I didn't know it's so difficult to grow them and I don't know if we can grow them here as I am staying in a tropical country. It really takes lots of efforts and patience to grow the roses.
I agree with @morgoodie, the roses in the picture area really beautiful. I always think it's good to use the compost we made, and stay away from those chemical products. I didn't know wood ash help to get rid of pests. I do some wood cutting sometimes, so perhaps I can put the wood ash on the plants, though sometimes my children play with the wood ash and put them everywhere.
I like peach roses, as they are quite rare to be found here, and I think it's a sweet color.
Hope you will get back all your roses very soon. With the love you put in, I am sure the roses will be back to you soon. :)
I am glad I made your day. I have gone back to working on my rose plants and I already see results.
Wow! What a beautiful flower of different colors! I don't have to compare your flowers to my own wife's garden of flowers for it's grown with a costly variety of orchids. She was once told me to secure any variety of rose if I happen to see one. She told me that for there was a white rose grown in my school. She wanted to a cut of such flower. Sad to say, someone had pulled it out when nobody was present in school.
If I were not mistaken, you call your rose as the "pride of solitaire" for it ranks everyone in the garden for its beauty and rarity. It's one of its kinds. Am I not right?
I called a particular rose pride of solitaire as that rose was perfect in every way. You will see it in the image I have uploaded. It is the third from left.
Orchids are difficult to grow. I hope you will write a post on your wife's efforts.
