Questioning Psychology

I never met anyone that had been helped by psycho-therapy.  I have met people who have gone to sessions and are even more crazy after than before.

This was my foundation so you can imagine my shock when I learned a girl I’d gone to school with was a psychologist.

This girl was …  let me give you an example…

Five of us are sitting at a table in a hang out.

Sonia says; “Hey, what you want to do tonight?”

Desireen says, “What about the new movie.”

Sharon says, “Yeah…let’s go.”

As we are getting up; Harriet (who will be the psychologist) says;

“You’re always pushing me around, making me do what you want to do.”

You can understand that Harriet was the kind of person you leave out when you can.  You live around her.

Another example;

Harriet gives a diatribe about all the offences we committed against her.   No one says anything.  She walks away.  There is silence.

Then Sharon says; “I don’t even think about Harriet…”

The rest of us chime in.  That she is so minor in our lives that we don’t recall if she was with us when we went to the concert, if she was at the dance, in fact, the only time we think of her is when she is in front of us.

Yet, Harriet believes we have her as the centre of our universe.

And she is a psychologist, capable of messing up people’s lives.  Capable of gaining control over their thoughts and beliefs and ideas.

A girl who had trouble relating to people, who had trouble expressing herself, who felt the victim of imaginary plots became a psychologist.

How do I know?

Doing a search of old school mates I recalled her, entered her name, and up she popped.

The world is a little more unsafe.

    • That's sad, I used to think that psychologists are people who tend to be around people all the time, and they are people who like to be in their own most of the time they are probably buried in their books, or are socialising somewhere. This is a profession that needs a lot of interaction with people so when you say that Harriet was always suspicious and always on her own I beg to wonder how she even became a psychologist? Anyhow I guess something's are just as they seem you can never tell how they came up

      • It shocked me and I tried to find out how.. apparently when she went to college it was one of the few subjects she did well in, then went on and got further training.

        So there she is; 'helping' people.

    • It is quite possible she is good in her profession as a psychologist. It is quite possible that by taking the course she learned to understand herself and can now help others because … guess she can say to her patients … “Been there. Done that. Let me show you a better way.”
