Pleasure and Pain Spring from Heart

Since men creation men have been trying to trace pleasure on earth losing eternal home paradise but men have failed in finding true pleasures on earth because men are still ignorant of this fact that the source of real and true pleasure lies in human heart.

Men are unaware of this fact that darkness and light, plain and pleasure, day and night, love and hate always walk side by side in practical life because men do not ponder over heart, what is heart not a mere blood supplier to the whole body but life force circulates mixing with human blood carrying human thought positive and negative of human being distributing the whole body organs.

We all of us must keep in mind that the real source of pain and pleasure is human heart if your heart is sad, you will feel the whole world is sad and if you are glad you will feel the whole world is glade,. Now think what is in human heart is not a mere blood supplier but it is the home of human soul that come directly from God.

Once I read a poem Dejection written by Coleridge, was a very beautiful poem but its message was very clear that the source of pleasure is human heart and nothing else. I think it is the best poem of Coleridge ever written o the source of dejection and the source of glee and gloom. When human heart be sad human wit and wisdom fail anon think why?  The main reason of this is that heart does receive the rays of God from the above.

Dejection is one of the most fame carrying poems of Coleridge. It thoroughly deals with the poet’s personal point of view about nature and some time it is called anti-Wordsworth-theory poem in the history of poetry. Actually Ode is a long lyric poem with a serious subject, elevated in style and elaborated in its structure. In which the poet is stimulated by an outer scene and turns on the attempt to solve either a private problem or a human problem.

One day the poet feels a spiritual pain sitting in his room. Pondering over his gloomy condition he left the room and reached in the garden was expected a hurricane that will remove his grief of heart. At last the storm came with rain cat and dog, the sky becomes clear but his heart pain and sadness do not lessen looking at this beautiful sight. Therefore he exclaimed in these words:

“O Lady we received but what we give

And in our life alone Nature live

Ours is her wedding garment, ours her shroud,”

Getting disappointment from nature he recalls his own salad days when a storm produced within him a poetic power that compelled him to compose poetry and now the case is entirely different. Youth has been defeated by old-age has decayed his fancy and imagination. Form his old-age experience he concludes that nature is neither charm-less nor harmless but is impersonal to all. It is a crystal mirror of our inner thoughts, feelings and emotions. Only our heart has power to change the world into hell and hell into heaven. Therefore he exclaimed in these words:

“Ah! From the soul itself must issue forth

A light, a glory a fair luminous cloud,”

After this he exposed the secret of happiness that lies in our heart. Those who are purer of heart remain happy throughout their life, but those who not purer of heart do not remain happy in mega world.

Therefore, at the end, he praises his beloved who at that time was in the valley of sleep and is away from mundane woe and grief. May the storm not disturb her sleep and now he prays to God for her soul remain away from worldly troubles. He prays for his ladylove in these words:

“O! Simple spirit guided from the above

Dear, friend devoutest of my choice

Thou mayst, thou ever, ever more rejoice”

To sum up, critics call it an anti-Wordsworthian poem that debunks the philosophy of life of Coleridge in simple and easy words. The main theme of the poem is that nature has nothing special for us. It wears the dress of our thoughts, feelings and emotions. Its diction is simple but its structure is complicated, mode is cogitative but his approach to nature is pragmatic.
