Nan can not bear to be alone. It is nearly pathological. If she is driving anywhere she wants someone in the car with her. She has virtually hired people to live in her house and be available to be there.
Nan is involved with a man who is virtually her adopted ‘pet’ . He lives from her pocket, and goes where she goes, does what she tells him to, in most cases. Every so often he goes off on his own, and couldn’t care less how upset she is.
She has broken up with him three times, and taken him back, simply because she can not be alone.
The idea that anyone can live alone, can go shopping alone is near to flying to the moon on a broomstick.
She is not an aberration, I know other women, young and old who can not stand their own company. They can not be alone. They must have people around them. They must have someone. They will make themselves uncomfortable, just as long as there is someone there.
Often, a younger woman would have admirers and friends who want to go all about the place so the fact she can not stand her own company is never uttered.
In many cases these women marry, have children, and fill their lives with their family and friends, always being there. Then the children grow up and maybe the husband dies or divorces, and the fact she can not bear her own company now bubbles to the surface.
If she has money she’ll ‘buy’ a ‘bunga boy’. This is a younger man with no prospects. He lives virtually no where, has no future, so will ‘sell’ himself to a woman like this in return for a roof, a full belly, clothing, and some pocket change.
The fact he doesn’t love her, or want to be with her is suppressed, and he’ll take his pleasures elsewhere, sometimes risking his ‘berth’ but mostly knowing how far he can go, because she needs him more than he actually needs her.
If she didn’t hate her own company so much she would not put herself in the position of having to depend on an undependable man who is there as long as she can pay him.
If she didn’t hate her own company she would develop hobbies and self-learning, she would explore her world, and focus on herself; her likes and wants. But she doesn’t know herself and doesn’t want to. She just does not want to be alone.
And that fear will put her in dangerous situations. She will be exposed to embarrassment, insult, and the overwhelming terror of solitude.

I really wonder why people fear to live alone. This is really a boon to be alone. There are many advantages of living alone. This is a test for someone to equip themselves for their future success without any disturbance or diversion of attention.
This should be practiced by all young people to be alone without any fear. This is a warmup match before taking up the real one in life. A writer can never be a writer without observing the people. A scientist can not come out with any new theory unless he lives alone and throws his mind to the applications and reading the books.
A footballer can not play his game unless he sits and plans the strategy for himself while dealing with so many attackers. He can not plan how to penetrate and tore the defense of the opponents in the match.
I think this is only a temporary weakness of the people to be afraid of living alone.But,once they practice it is not a major problem for anybody.
I fully agree with you. It is so important to be able to function by one's self. Yet, today, so many people seem terrified of it.
Indeed there are a lot of people like that. They just have to have somebody in their company.
I am proud of myself because I learned how to be by myself most of the time. Even at the office, since I am alone in our office room most of the time, because our boss seldom takes her office here but instead upstairs in the affiliates' office, I learned how to enjoy my own company.
I would always switch on my cell phone's radio to FM stations where deejays would be in twos and be making jokes in between playing of music. That way, I feel that I am not alone. I laugh at their jokes even while I am alone in the room.
In shopping, I love doing it alone. That's because I can go on fitting clothes for the whole day, without being bothered that my companion is already getting tired. I eat when I am tired already and would continue fitting and shopping for clothes and shoes and bags.
My husband knows that, because I don't like bringing him when I am shopping for myself, since he complains it takes me so long to choose what I have to buy.
I love my company. Though of course, I have lots of friends too.
I don't mind being alone. I do like shopping alone so as not to inconvenience anyone. I like to make my own food ... I seem to like pepper more than others. I am amazed by people who hate to be 'alone'.

We live, walk, breath, and sleep alone is a good and free thing, no need to take care of others feeling and adjust life style due to other.
I love to be alone or have "me time" after having 2 noisy kids at home.But, they only will be made no noise after sleep. Hehe!
