Patient’s Role to Help Diagnose a Disease

She was have palpitations and a doctor was consulted. The Doctor was confused as he did not find anything that would lead to a heart disease. Nevertheless he prescribed something that would stop those palpitations. But the palpitations continued. She had not mentioned her craving for chocolates which in fact was the cause for these palpitations.

There are more than ten causes that lead to palpitations but the patient should aid in helping the diagnosis.  These days doctors have little time to sit with a patient and ask a volley of questions that the good old days doctors did. It is therefore important that the patient plays their role.

The best approach would be:

1.Let  not someone else do the talking. Talking to a doctor is like a confession – a one on one interaction- unless the patient is a minor or is not in a position to talk

2.There should be a file maintained to record past history of sickness in every detail.

3. The patient should be honest and tell the doctor everything even that which could be embarrassing.  Hiding can lead to wrong diagnosis.

4.A Doctor is always in a hurry but the patient should see that the doctor knows everything before prescribing.

5.Never keep a doctor’s payment pending as that can lead to a doctor taking less interest in a patient. After all it is  his bread.

6.Doctors make mistakes too. Pointing them out diplomatically would be necessary

. 7.The prescribed medicines should be taken as per the advice given by the doctor. Patients tend to stop taking a course of medicines when they feel relief. This particularly is about antibiotics. If the course is not completed then the patient will get immuned to that drug and that drug will not work in the future.

    • Patient has the biggest role in determining the specific diagnosis of certain diseases. Past medical history can also be the basis for it. In some cases, family medical history can be obtained by personal interview with the patient. There are some diseases that can be acquired or inherited.

Doctors are considered second to God. However, they can determine the diagnosis without relying on laboratory tests, diagnostic tools and the like. Ocular Inspection is not enough. It should be integrated before finding the real diagnosis.

    • Well what you have shared is actually very true. Patients have a very big role to play when they go see a doctor. It's good to keep in mind that doctors ask also human they make mistakes and that sometimes misdiagnize and that's dangerous but when it is realized early enough it should be rectified immediately. Then when a doctor is talking to patient she or he should never be in a hurry that's one job that one has to practice a lot of patience when dealing with patients that should never be one hurry. And yes I agree when you say that the patient should be very open like an open book don't hide anything however embarassing it may be or sound because that is what will save you.
