Part 1: Ever heard of Travelicious?

Disclaimer: All words written here are my own. Nobody (not even Travelicious) persuaded me to write in this manner. I am just telling my firsthand experience with the site to hopefully clarify all doubts and whatnots about it.

I am an active member in another paying forum called ForumCoin. And this week, a fellow FC member posted a website called Travelicious which aims to attract freelance/potential travel writers. The idea behind the scheme seems promising – it offers A$40 for a 1000-word article about anything travel-related. It seems like a good writing opportunity and I was immediately enticed to try so I did a bit of research around the site.

While I was actively searching for reviews, I stumbled on a couple of articles (here and here) where the writers also shared their experiences with the site. It does seem like a legit paying site but unlike the straightforward money-making scheme summarized under their Write for Us page, there is a catch. The catch is that after the application is approved, a more detailed explanation about the scheme will be sent to the interested applicant. In this part, there is a possible “deal breaker” to know of – you need to BUY your own domain (ie create your own travel blog) to proceed. The amount narrated in the “How To” guide was $12 for one-year domain hosting from GoDaddy and it went on to say that it is the only form of “investment” required. To be honest, it was quite a turn off as it would’ve been a lot “nicer” (IMHO) to see this arrangement firsthand rather than go through the application process and only see the potential revenue of A$40 per 1000-word travel article.

Another feedback I see from other “successful” travel writers is that there seem to be no “further writing assignments” from Travelicious. It seems that after the first article gets paid, you don’t get any further notification from the site requesting for your writing services and as a result, you don’t get to earn anything more. At this point, it was a total bummer for me. I also read from the comments section of one article I saw that in order to have “better chances” of future assignments, you need to be actively posting on your travel blog (the one you paid for hosting through GoDaddy). And no, posting on your travel blog will NOT get paid.

But then it hit me. It seems that while there are some obvious “marketing tactics” here and there implemented on the site, the common denominator is that Travelicious does pay. Sure, it is not to the tune of the full A$40 or to earn regular A$40 for writing 1000-word travel articles but the bottom line is – the site is legitimately paying. And if I earn roughly A$25 (after the hosting fees are reduced), is that a bad idea at all to earn in exchange for writing a 1000-word travel article? I don’t think so.

So you guessed it right – I bit the bullet. I applied, bought a domain, and submitted an article. And yes, I will leave you hanging for a bit as I write a second part to this series to share the experience, too.

    • Why did you stop? Why not hit us with the rest of the info here.

You know getting some first hand testimonial from people who have tried things first has a great way of motivating someone into doing the right thing.

      • argh! As I was saying, I had the entire testimonial series submitted but it is taking some time to get approved. I see you have read the second part which contained the payment proof but I am still waiting o. the third part to cap it off (ie why you should consider it for yourself). I don't get anything by telling this but there has been doubts on the site especially because there is the 'catch' with the paid domain but I hope that online earners would re-consider since it really pays anyway.

    • I think this site is for serious Travel bloggers who are not blogging to get pennies apart from the Pounds.

      • Probably it is since there is a sort of "investment" when you buy a domain. But judging from some of the articles submitted on the site, they really do accept all proficiency and command of the English language. So even if you are not overly confident on your English, you can earn from the first article. :)

    • I have submitted my first blog and I update my website as well. Would I get any more writing assignment from their end ? I would be grateful if you clear this doubt. I am a web developer myself; If they won't be giving me any more assignments then I would be better off transforming that site into something else and sell it.

      Please do let me know.

    • It's a scam. They get affiliate fees for your domain signup, but the real reason they pay is they want a link to their site. That's why they require you to purchase a domain. This is just an SEO scam -- they are preying on people's desire to become a writer. No real publisher requires writers to have a blog (trust me).

It used to be that companies would pay sites $75 to put a link to them up, but then Google said that it was banned, and if people were caught doing it their sites would be penalized in search results. So by pretending to buy a blog post from you, they get around this rule despite the fact that they are clearly buying links. That's why they will let anyone sign up. They don't care about the writing, they just want the link.

      • Hi! thanks for the insight. I did submit my article to Travelicious as well (so obviously, I already went through the whole process of buying the domain, etc.). I have been planning on purchasing a domain for the longest time, so that part's okay with me. My worry now is that what if I've already developed the site and had a lot of traffic, how will Travelicious benefit from it given that the domain is linked to their site? Can you give me an insight about it? Thanks.

    • Hey! My blog has been set-up and all other procedures have been done. Can you please tell me where exactly do we submit our first article to travelicious for approval?
