Packed Lunch: Grilled Ham Pita Bread

On the first day of school, it is a major passage where parents had to be

separated from their kids up to 7 hours daily, 5 days a week.

So far, my 9 year old boy had been safe and secure from food poisoning

and diarrhea.

Up to this point, I had been preparing packed lunch for him since he was

6 years old.

For the past few years, I have been attempting to make his school lunch as

healthy as possible.

I offered variety of foods, ranging from homemade muffins, cookies,

sandwiches, toast bread, pancakes and assorted wraps.

Although fast food burgers and pizzas are convenient and filling for my

little one to handle, these are unhealthy lunch as they are high in calorie

and high in fats.

These food would lead to obesity in his later grown up years.

I wouldn’t want to see my son growing up in the midst of obesity

epidemic and prevent him from contracting cardiovascular disease,

Type 2 diabetes or high blood pressure.

My Son’s Favorite Packed Lunch

Grilled Ham Pita Sandwiches is his favorite lunch, be it at home or at school.

I guessed that every kid loves toasted ham with cheese or iceberg lettuce,

 sandwiched in between toasted pita.

Some children would eat the hams on its own but it wouldn’t be as filling.

Adding more packed nutritious ingredients into this easy to prepare lunch

 in less than 15 minutes.

You can either grill or lightly toast the ham in a frying pan with a little butter.

Dislike iceberg lettuce?

how about replacing the vegetable with romaine lettuce, cabbages or slices of fresh tomatoes?

Out of pitas?

Grilled Ham Pitta Sandwiches Recipe

Ingredients

  • 2 plain or whole wheat pitas
  • 2 slices of ham
  • 2 slices of low fat cheese
  • Slices of tomatoes
  • Some salad leaves
  • Sauteed onions

Step by step instructions

  1. Toast all the pitas in a toaster or oven.
  2. Cut a small slice from one side of the pita bread.
  3.  Heat up a skillet or frying pan with a little butter.
  4. Saute onion rings until caramelized and fragrant.
  5.  Remove aside.
  6. With the remainder butter, lightly toast the ham until brownish.
  7. Remember to flip to the other side which is uncooked.
  8.  Stuff in the salad leaves, cooked ham, a slice of cheese, a slice of

tomato and some onions.

Use a plastic wrap or ziplock bag to wrap up the pita sandwich for packed

 lunch box.

Otherwise, the pita filings would plop out of it during your child’s journey

 to school.

What is a pita bread?

A pita or pitta bread is a round dough which is flatten before baking in

high temperature oven.

It puffed up which induced the white round bread to open up a “pocket”.

What can you add to pita bread?

You can wrap up pita bread with:

  • Kebab meats
  • Hams
  • Grilled Cheese
  • Grilled Chicken or Turkey
  • Grilled Pork
  • Grilled Beef
  • Grilled Mutton
  • Salad vegetables
  • Caramelize onions
  • Slices of Tomatoes
  • Potato Chips
  • Carrots
  • Cucumbers
  • Canned Tuna

Do you have any favorite pita bread fillings to share?

Have a happy meal!

    • It's great that your son prefers a healthy lunch, Peachy. So many kids just want junk food when they go to school :(

Pinned your recipe, and scheduled a Tweet in Buffer

    • @ruby3881/
      thanks very much.
Yup I agree that most kids would rather spend money on junk food in school and I am pleased that my son still prefers homemade food for his packed lunch.
